I’m not particularly interested in running for president, but I think I’d make a good president.

Show some backbone, Fred. You ain't gonna get it unless you want it. Bad.

That's just the nature of the presidency.

Expect that, should Fred win, the press conferences would be quite different from what they are now.

Sounds pretty exciting to me.

I gave a donation to his campaign the night he announced and it was the biggest waste of money so far.

I thought the two of you needed to be alerted to a possible Huckabee shill.

“”I’m not particularly interested in running for president,” the former senator said at a campaign event in Burlington when challenged by a voter over his desire to be commander-in-chief. “

Fred should know better, than make statements like that. We all know what he means, but as you said, “bad choice of words”.

The main reason this reflects badly on him, is that there will be a tooth-and-nail fight in the general election between the R and D nominees and what Fred is saying, is that he is not willing to give his 110% in the campaign fight with the Dems and we all know that will mean a landslide Dem victory. Fred is willing to do a cakewalk to a coronation, but he won’t fight for it — not a good sign. He may have gotten away with that if the Republican nomination would guarantee him the presidency — but nothing is further from the truth. When Fred was running for Senator, he was putting in whatever it took, he doesn’t seem to have that attitude this time.

All those saying Fred is so great at saying he really doesn't want it, but if it happens, so be it, need to read and re-read your post:

[with emphasis]

Show some backbone, Fred. You ain't gonna get it unless you want it.

“Actually, given the nature of the job, its important that whoever gets to be President, really, REALLY wants to do it. And that means running for the job as hard as they can.”

I could NOT disagree MORE with this statement.

Those people who “REALY, REALLY” want something like being President only want the power that goes with it.

I believe Fred when he says he is running because he wants to help the country and thinks he is the right man for the job.

Just because he isn’t “passionate” about being President doesn’t mean he won’t do an excellent job.

I am for Fred, but NOT if he does not want to lead my country. If his heart is not in it, then he needs to go pretend as an actor again. I don't need him to pretend to be my president. This really is disheartening. I was totally for Fred.

I see you are so supportive of Fred that you didn't even bother to actually read the quote in context.

... its important that whoever gets to be President, really, REALLY wants to do it.

I don't trust the people who have wanted to be POTUS since high school. Both Clintons come to mind!

I like Fred's perspective on it. He knows what it's all about. We see the perks but we don't see the pressure--we just know it's there.

If Gore had won in 2000, GWB would have gone merrily back to his ranch and cut brush. He would not have gone into a funk and gained 30 lbs.

I don't trust those who are consumed by the power and that's what too many of them are about, IMO.

Of the entire bunch, I think Fred Thompson would be the best president. Being a good campaigner has nothing to do with doing the job. We have too many campaigners; few capable candidates ready to do the job.

If I were a Dem I think my choice, having paid little attention to all candidates, would be Bill Richardson.

Too bad more candidates can't be like Fred Thompson and George Washington and Abraham Lincoln

The MSM habitually takes words out of context and distorts or reverses their meaning. That’s what they’ve done in this case.

Believe me, it’s impossible to say anything at any length without leaving yourself open to this kind of corrupt and deliberate distortion or falsification.

You can say “I did not murder my wife,” and all they have to do is leave out the word “not.”

If someone really, really wants to be president, they’re doing for themselves more than for anyone or anything else (Americans, freedom, etc). Those sorts of people are the last ones I’d want to possess the full power of the president, e.g. Hillary! Look at the Clinton body count and see whether someone who really, really wants to be president uses it for their own ends or for greater ones.

“Being a good campaigner has nothing to do with doing the job.”

The problem is that you have to get ELECTED first, to be able to BE president — which, for Republicans, means not only you have to win the nomination, but you have to BEAT the Dem nominee. Being laid back and unwilling to really FIGHT to get elected will only get us Hillary.

As I said, Fred should know better than to make statements that can be exploited.

You said — “I thought the two of you needed to be alerted to a possible Huckabee shill.”

LOL! Elections makes a lot of people crazy and/or paranoid...

I never have thought Fred Thompson was the right person, along with a list of others, too — and so I suppose that makes me or anyone else who disagrees with you a Huckabee shill... :-)

And I can see the thinking of some people where they don’t want someone who can “take it or leave it” — when it comes to the job of the President of the United States.

I would personally feel more comfortable with someone who would sacrifice his mother and daughter and wife, for doing the right kind of job as President of the United States, even if it means it will be a detriment and harmful to his mother, daughter and wife. The “job of the country” must be “all consuming” and take second place to no other person on this earth (but not second place to God, Himself)

Regards,
Star Traveler

IF, if this is what Thompson said, then he needs to drop out and go home. I am for Fred, but NOT if he does not want to lead my country. Did your ability to read retire when you did? Try it again. Several times, if need be.
