ANNAPOLIS After eleven days of presidential straw poll ballots cast at the Maryland Republican Partys State Fair booth, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) was announced last night as the winner.
The Maryland Republican Partys first-ever presidential straw poll at the State Fair resulted in nearly 1,000 Marylanders casting a vote for their favorite Republican candidate for president.

Great, what’s he got now around our nation for the Republican primary, polling 68% or what?

Ron Paul is good at winning straw polls. But he’d probably register in single digits against Hillary.

No....but Paul is moving up, now ahead of Hunter, Brownback and Tancredo. Despite a media black-out (including talk radio and Fox), he is now up to 3 percent.
To: George W. Bush
Yet another victory for Ron Paul.

But hed probably register in single digits against Hillary. Not true. A major pollster (it was discussed about a month ago on FR) found that he'd get over 30 percent against Hillary. Imagine what he would get if the media bothered to cover him. Actually, a Paul candidacy is Hillary's worst nightmare. He could constantly remind the public that she has a consistent record in disasterous world policing and voted to authorize this war.
To: Captain Kirk
3% sounds like a mighty surge, wow.

But hed probably register in single digits against Hillary. That's what they said about the primaries and straw polls, but for the sake of discussion, let's agree to that assertion. We're back to the old argument of voting for principle or voting for another Rockefeller Republican, "compassionate" (read: Not) conservative that, in this election, will be the extinction level event for conservatism and, by extension, the Constitution.

Single digits, no way!
.25%, maybe even .75% at least!
Double digits every time!

but for the sake of discussion, let's agree to that assertion You don't have to do it. A Paul/Hillary match-up was done over a month a ago by a major pollster and showed him getting over 30 percent (despite his very low name recognition).
To: Hurricane Bruiser
The straw poll was open to all voting age adults regardless of party affiliation... I wonder how many democrats voted in this poll.
To: Hurricane Bruiser
Romney does very well in straw polls too - but only when he busses in supporters and spends lavishly on food and entertainment. Somehow, that isn’t treated as “spamming the polls”.
And of course Hunter does ok when every other major candidate skips the poll and the state decides to limit voters to prior year delegates.

Double digits every time! Funny stuff. Paul is now at 3 percent in national polls, a tripling of his previous support. Get with the program. Even the anti-Paulites are starting to call him a "3 percenter," rather than a "1 percenter."

I don’t know how many Dems voted in this poll. I am sure some did but I am also sure that quite a number of Dems would vote for Ron Paul over Hillary.
The Republican Party must attract independants and conservative Democrats in order to win this election. From what I see of the other candidates, not many independants would vote for a Bush clone and conservative Republicans are upset at the growth of government and might stay home. That plus the unhappiness with the war, tells me that Hillary would win unless the GOP picks someone who is against policing the world such as Ron Paul.
