President Bush tried to meet Congress halfway on that trumped-up federal prosecutor nonsense - and got his hand slapped away.
No surprise.
So why did he even bother?
On Tuesday, the president decided to let Congress look at executive-branch internal documents regarding personnel practice - an almost unheard of gesture.
All he asked was that lawmakers not issue subpoenas and create a media spectacle over the matter.
But less than 24 hours later, a House panel nonetheless authorized subpoenas for White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove, ex-Counsel Harriet Miers and other key Bush aides.
So much for the nice-guy route.
If the subpoenas are actually issued, the White House needs to fight them tooth-and-nail - for the president surely holds the constitutional high ground.
It is now clear that the Democratic Congress intends to give Bush no peace for the remainder of his term.
No peace on the war.
No peace domestically.
No peace whatsoever.
Bush needn't play along - not for a minute. And he shouldn't.
He's been offering olive branches left and right, and failing to defend what he believes is right.
He'd fallen down on this even before the latest flap over Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' handling of the ouster of eight federal prosecutors - a case where there's never been a shred of evidence of a scandal.

.....Look into other criminal doings such as the Reid Land deals.....
One of the fired eight was from Nevada. The furor may be because of anticipated trouble for Ried spawn. The way to destroy Reid is to get his sons.
As these domestic issues relate to the War on Terror, if anyone needs an abject lesson in what happens when you appease your enemy, you need look no further than to how the Dems respond to Bush's attempts to placate them.
I question as to whether they are enablers or are the actual terrorists.
Who did the antiwar protests March 19th in Washington DC?
ANSWER
Who belongs to ANSWER?
The Progressive Democrats of America.
Republicans went from being in control of all three branches of government to cowering behind the Presidential podium. Don't blame the voter for this sorry state. Elected officials were voted in to fight for what's right. No fight; no re-election.
(Note to politicians: don't wait until a month or two before the election to look like you're doing something.)
"Bush lacks spine. We needed a Republican Bill Clinton and what we got was a Republican Jimmy Carter. W should have been in attack mode for all of his two terms"
BINGO
Gonzales is a little twerp - I hate when President put their little buddies into high office - with zero capabilities.
GW (I voted for him twice) is becoming an embarrassment - I am sick and tired of his conciliatory tone of voice.
If you won't fight for your own administration - how can expect the troops to fight for you and your nation.
Get off your butt Bush.
Excellent point!
>>>>a war Mr. President - not just with terrorists, but Democrats too
Terrorists, and the Democrats who support them. What's the difference?
40 years ago, Jane Fonda had to travel 8000 miles to Hanoi to stab Americans in the back, Now they do it in DC.
" Is there any Republican or conservative that doesn't want to fight the dems? "
(Insert list of 'Republican' congresscritters and senators here)
About time! Maybe he now understands that Kennedy is not his friend and that the democrats are out of destroy him and his administration. He proved he is a nice guy now he is standing and fighting...good for him.
Well said!
That's the way I'd like to think of it.
I almost crapped when he appointed Bill Clinton to work with his dad after the hurricane. Then claimed bill was like part of the family. I could hardly stop from puking.
Its about time Sandy took that test.
There must be a charge somewhere that they could use on him.
His sentence after the burglary was a joke.
Yeah, the problem is that W will force this to the ultimate legal end to "protect the office of the presidency" but he never does enough to protect his own agenda. He has a humble side to his personality that I admire, but when it comes to the nation's best interests I wish he would ruthlessly defend his positions for his own sake.
He must be just exhausted. Few presidents have had as many problems thrown at them. 9/11, Katrina, etc.
Thats what Cowards do.. to appear strong..
Here Here! That is exactly what should be done. Give Schmuckie Schumer a figurative slap in the face.
If Wolfie had ever read the Constitution, he might have a better understanding of the situation!
If only it were so ... still hoping!
"He must be exhausted" (?)
Ok - fair enough - then he should resign if he's too tired to carry the load.
I have supported this President 100% - but I am sick of fighting for someone who won't fight for himself, his office, his party, and most importantly for the men and women who are fighting for him - as President.
The President must be seen by the troops as a LEADER - not an appeaser.
Too tired? Understandable thought - but no excuse.
Suck it up - go for a run - and start firing people and start firing at people.
Screw your damn legacy.
