The United States is and for most of its history has been a nation of people who know they have a good thing and basically just want to be left alone to enjoy liberty, prosperity, and the pursuit of happiness. Yes, even todays American socialists, with their demand for equality of result (except for themselves their personal fortunes and high status are somehow in their minds exempt from the demands of equal impoverishment they make of others) see themselves as embodying the best of Jefferson, Madison, and Paine.
This is, in my mind, the explanation of how we have approached most wars in general and the war on terror in particular. Until the Japanese attacked Naval Station Pearl Harbor, 62% of the American public opposed the US being involved in World War II. Before the war ended, Roosevelts popularity had fallen to below 35%. Half of the American public opposed our entry into the Korean War. I graduated from college in 1968 when almost every one of my male college classmates was frantic with his attempts to avoid military service and did everything they could including burning-down the ROTC building, stoning recruiters, and throwing their urine samples at officers during induction physicals to exempt themselves from serving. When, to our countrys everlasting shame, the Democratic Congress cut-off all funding to our South Vietnamese allies in 1973 (even rifle ammunition) and condemned three million Vietnamese and Cambodians to death by torture, the country as a whole ignored these results and went on its way back to enjoying itself as best it could.
Today, as the Big Lie is again being told by the likes of Charlie Rangel, John Kerry, and Nancy Pelosi that only poor, stupid slobs are dumb or desperate enough to join the military, we are in the third decade of a war waged against us by religious fanatics who will not stop until we are destroyed and made by them servants in a world-wide caliphate. The attacks of September 11, 2001, were a shock and for a brief time united the country in opposition to these semi-literate, misogynistic, medieval thugs who, BTW, want to kill all the Jews and homosexuals. But that was over five years ago, just under the total length of World War II. And the war weve been fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq is so, you know, long, and we havent beaten the bad guys and those places are, you know, so far away, and heck, what did we do to make them angry in the first place? If we just bail out now and make nice, why, they may even start liking us again, and how likely is it that they will hurt us again here at home and anyway we know that its all the Bush Cabal thats doing this for oil and pride and just pure Republican evil (and probably homophobia and sexism and racism, too) and I just want to get back to living the good life now that the Democrats are back in control and will do anything for me just to make themselves feel like virtuous liberals
So, here we are, about to abandon another tough fight in some place not one American in 30 can even find on a map, a fight we didnt want in the first place. The producers of the TV fantasy 24 are being pilloried for being racist and Islamophobic even as the same critics are applauding truly bad science fiction like An Inconvenient Truth and truly despicable lies like Fahrenheit 911. So the wait begins. We are assuring more attacks on the US by the bad guys who think in terms of decades and centuries, not the time between episodes of American Idol. The WMD attacks on 24 will happen in fact because we are not tough enough to see things through as they are. When this attack rouses us again to righteous anger, I wonder if we will still have the stuff it takes to fight back and win. Or will being subjects of a world-wide caliphate seem to a nation that has in large part degenerated to a country of Eloi somehow easier, more peaceful, and less stressful.
well said!
Well said, madam. Well said indeed!
I think he's being generous in calling the "semi-literate". But, I think the enemy within is actually hoping for future attacks so they can say that we need to surrender.
Good article, thanks for posting it here.

Excellent!
You may find this interesting.

I think the left forgot.
How true. We have done a spain and the enemy is emboldened.
PELOSI - I just had the privilege of meeting with the family of the young man who received the Congressional Medal of Honor. He jumped on a hand grenade and saved the lives of his other young people in his unit.
Excellent and well written. The next attack on our soil will probably set off a world war with great internal strife here at home.
I just finished reading the cite you posted. I'm overwhelmed and cannot think of anything to say, except Come Lord Jesus, Come. Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.
Just finished the cite you posted, as well. Yes, I wondered about that. I just hope we can come up with solutions for people who really, really need to be here without opening the door for those who don't.
Immigration is a fine balance, and we've yet to find it.
Johnnie, get your gun, Get your gun, get your gun, Take it on the run, On the run, on the run. Hear them calling, you and me, Every son of liberty. Hurry right away, No delay, go today, Make your daddy glad To have had such a lad. Tell your sweetheart not to pine, To be proud her boy's in line.
Johnnie, get your gun, Get your gun, get your gun, Johnnie show the Hun Who's a son of a gun. Hoist the flag and let her fly, Yankee Doodle do or die. Pack your little kit, Show your grit, do your bit. Yankee to the ranks, From the towns and the tanks. Make your mother proud of you, And the old Red, White and Blue.
Over there, over there,Send the word, send the word over there - That the Yanks are coming,The Yanks are coming,The drums rum-tumming Ev'rywhere. So prepare, say a pray'r, Send the word, send the word to beware. WE'LL BE OVER, WE'RE COMING OVER,AND WE WON'T COME BACK TILL IT'S OVER OVER THERE!"
The thing is that back then the Berkeley Marxists helped to overthrow the Shah. They ended up helping to cause the problem we have now. According to the article I cited, some realized that. I've often wondered, in the current debate about Iran, why the role of our students in the 79 Revolution hasn't been brought to the forefront. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.
Me too.
I don't have a good feeling about it. To many - especially Liberals and the tuned out ( I put the majority of younger people in this category, from experience) - war is just a bad reality TV show, not a serious life-or-death enterprise which determines your ultimate "lifestyle".
When the crunch comes to our shores (and it will) most of these same people will just want to do what they aways have done best - change the channel - not actually do something dirty and dangerous, like resist or take proactive action against evil.
"Compromise" will be their solution. It always was. It still is. It always will be.
I wish we could get songs like that back into the public scene. I do believe a LOT of us believe in our military and the ability we have always had to vanquish our enemies. Why else, in Los Angeles, do I see far more SUPPORT OUR TROOPS magnets on the backs of cars than those insipid Kerry Edwards stickers (that appear new)?
