Looking ahead to the 2008 electoral map, there are two regions where the parties are increasingly competitive: the Southwest quartet of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada and the upper Midwest trio of Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
In what turned out to be a very rough year for Republicans, Tim Pawlenty's reelection in the Minnesota Gubernatorial race, coupled with the 2008 GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul and Minnesota's ten electoral votes, should elevate Governor Pawlenty to very near the top of the VP short list - irrespective of who the Republican nominee turns out to be.
Two and half weeks ago I wrote:
With the possibility of a Democratic takeover of Congress having risen considerably these last few weeks McCain is well positioned to pick up the pieces from a dispirited and angry Republican party if they indeed lose two weeks from today. At the end of the day McCain's biggest appeal to Republicans in the fight for the nomination will be his claim (credibly) that he can win in 2008. And a Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid could be all John McCain needs to convince enough nervous conservatives to get behind him to ensure blowing the Democrats out of the water in 2008.

I won't vote for any combo that includes McCain. Period. Don't ask it of me.
How about Kyl/Pawlenty?
Well, I do like Tim Pawlenty.
McCain will not get the nomination. He looks horrible and not that well besides everything else.
Nice of RCP to be trolling for McCain already. (sarcasm)
It seems to me that Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada are turning purple, tending toward blue.

Dittos.

How about Hillary Clinton/Tipper Gore?
I'm floating Cornyn and Kyl myself..
McCain is toast... Pawlenty is a big unknown.
Then the time to make that clear is in the Primaries.
Primaries, primaries, primaries. THAT is where Republicans should make their ideological stand. Once the ticket is formed, we MUST come together and prevent a complete liberal takeover of government.
Can't the GOP do better than McCain? I really want to see a younger person. (New ideas--new blood)
Not McCain.
No senator.
Senators make sucky presidents.
Pawlenty/Kyl or Palwenty/Sanford.
I think these people who want to continuously push the GOP to the left should just become democrats and get it over with. The occasional conservative thoughts they have might even do some good for the democrats and us by extension.
Juan McCainez is not going to be President. If you thought the base stayed home Tuesday...
Great! Another opportunity to kick McMeMeMe's butt! Booyah!
We need the midwest again.
If we cant win in Ohio and Iowa and Pennsylvania and the whole northeast ... welcome Uberleader Comrade Hillary for Permanent President.
