Americans will die for liberty
Telegraph UK online ^ | (Filed: 11/08/2006) | Andrew Gimson

The Americans are more old-fashioned than us, and what is equally admirable, they are not ashamed of being old-fashioned. They know Churchill was a great man, so they put his house on the map. There is a kind of Englishman to whom this sort of behaviour seems painfully unsophisticated.

We are inclined, in our snobbish way, to dismiss the Americans as a new and vulgar people, whose civilisation has hardly risen above the level of cowboys and Indians. Yet the United States of America is actually the oldest republic in the world, with a constitution that is one of the noblest works of man. When one strips away the distracting symbols of modernity - motor cars, skyscrapers, space rockets, microchips, junk food - one finds an essentially 18th-century country. While Europe has engaged in the headlong and frankly rather immature pursuit of novelty - how many constitutions have the nations of Europe been through in this time? - the Americans have held to the ideals enunciated more than 200 years ago by their founding fathers.

But when the Americans speak of freedom, we should not imagine, in our cynical and worldly-wise way, that they are merely using that word as a cloak for realpolitik. They are not above realpolitik, but they also mean what they say.

These formidable people think freedom is so valuable that it is worth dying for

"These formidable people think freedom is so valuable that it is worth dying for."

This seems to me a very honest British conservative viewpoint. He outlines many of the reason why I admire America.

Any comments?

It is indeed a very Conservative view and certainly one I hold. This is also a very enlightened view that can see through all the liberal media dross that keeps getting fed to us everyday.

What worrys me more though is that slowly more and more people are being taken in by this liberal rubbish every day, mind you a small glimmer of hope on BBC Newsnight lastnight when indegionous folk in High Wycombe finally got the chance to have their say on a BBC microphone and complained about the brainwashing by Islamic extremists living in the area, I couldn't beleive they broadcast it.

I just hope it was my e-mail of complaint that I sent them a while back that helped swing the pendulum a bit.

The author was kind. However, isn't the Netherlands older (and if Switzerland is a republic, Switzerland, too)?

My modem is down, stuck on dial-up or I would download and post this WWII poster entitled "Americans Will Always Fight for Liberty."

http://www.ddaymuseum.org/pdf/edu_libertyposter.pdf

Perhaps someone not so temporarily technically impaired would do the honors.

It's not a quote of U.S. origin, but it works:

It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

To my knowledge the Netherlands isn't a republic.

Switzerland was occupied by Napoleon so their constitution dates form 1848.

I think he got the facts right.

kind regards

Something proper that was used when the French foreign minister acted condescending to the Americans by suggesting the United States should take the advice of France because it was an older country was the statement that although France was culturally older than the United States, politically the United States is older than modern France (especially if modern France is started in in the late 1960's (1970's?)).

Also, many other countries, including allies, teamed up with France on this. The Chinese mentioned that their civilization went back millennia. Somewhat more disgusting was Mr. Straw's (the former British foreign secretary(?)) comment that Britain was formed in 1066--by the French.

The political maturity and experience of a country is more useful in invading and rebuilding a country than cultural age.

Did he say that? Why am I not surprised.

I missed that one - but then I gave up listening to Jack (hots for Condi) Straw a long time ago.

Also, to be realistic, there are probably about the same number of rude Americans as their are rude Europeans.

And Americans as a single unit should lay off the junk food a bit, too.

I´m not good at HTML either, but you should learn this one for FR:

To post images, just type in Ximg src="pastethelinkofyourimageHERE"X

And instead of the X use < respectively > . Got it?

At least Mr. Straw was sacked after your last vote.
