Liberal Idealist Gives Fair Tax Big Thumbs Up
The Tampa Tribune ^ | July 27, 2006 | By TOM JACKSON

Posted on 07/31/2006 3:50:50 PM PDT by pigdog

Ron Deval - boomer, ecologist, humanist, peacenik, political agnostic and unapologetically Canadian - has a surprise for fans of all causes liberal.

Reliably left on most issues, Deval is nonetheless passionate about a tax revolution whose growing army is populated largely by conservatives and libertarians. Describing himself as an "advocate of things that favor humanity," Deval is, in short, a Fair Tax maniac.

Encouragingly, the Land O' Lakes man is not just another guy with an opinion and a couple of Web sites. He can navigate a spread sheet.

After about 20 years designing programs that helped wealthy clients of Northwestern Mutual in Milwaukee and Tampa pass inheritances to their heirs, Deval, 53, became a real estate agent and tax preparer - two professions keenly opposed to seeing the current system, with its designed-in winners and losers, scrapped.

"If all taxpayers knew about the benefits" of the Fair Tax, a proposed national sales tax designed to replace America's current complicated, cumbersome and anti-competitive tax code, "it would pass in a heartbeat," Deval says.

It's gratifying to see some of those of the liberal persuasion start to brighten up and realize the benefits of the FairTax. One of the original FairTax sponsors was Colin Peterson, a Democrat.

It's good to see more coming on board as the bill is totally non-political after all.

And that means that it's time to start pestering all of our Democrat Congressmen, too, about getting behind the FairTax ... so get those cards and letters going!!!

I don't understand how this was posted under "News/Activism". I specified "Business/Economy" and "Government" yet it ends up under "News/Activism".

What causes that action???

A 30% HIDDEN PROGRESSIVE tax on everything we buy and every single American gets put on the government dole.

The most socialist idea I ever heard.

Bump. We'll take 'em any way we can get 'em. There is also a left winger out West who is supposedly running for President - also supports the fair tax (HR 25).

If liberals like it, we should be very wary.

Public dole? That money is a return of taxes paid. You want socialism, you already have it. The socialist government manipulates everything from home ownership to hot water heaters through the current tax code. THAT is socialism.

A hidden tax

so people won't know what government is taking

every American gets a 'prebate' (welfare) the poor get more, rich pay more (welfare-progressive)

meaning there is never going to be an incentive to cut the tax or cut spending.

The Democrats will campaign on increasing the prebate so they can raise twice as much in tax hikes.

and it does not automatically do away with an income tax either.

This is worst idea ever.

We're fighting every day to get MORE liberals to like it. Seems they would prefer to direct behavior with the current tax code.

You're right. The current income tax is so much better and oh so transparent. /sarc

Do you support the current system? Or do you have another plan?

Why would you call the most visible tax ever proposed 'a hidden tax'? Did your fingers get carried away? Or were you being deliberately disingenuous?

tell me where you read in the original bill that it's 30%..HINT: it's nowhere to be found..the rate is somewhere between 21-23%..

Public dole? That money is a return of taxes paid

The poor who paid no tax gets it and the richer who paid tons of taxes get very little of that back.

Its a lot like what we have now, just hidden and a new monthly incentive to LOVE big government.

people NOW have no idea how much the government is taking..ask people at tax time how much tax they paid and you'll more than likely get an answer of "none, matter of fact, I'm getting some back"..

it's the grand scheme..take it before citizens see it and they have no clue how much they're paying..

what's easier, spending hours in april preparing taxes, or going to the store, buy an item for $100, the bill is $123 and your income tax (fair tax) is paid, no paperwork..

A hidden tax

How so? It will be on every receipt you get? Very overt.

every American gets a 'prebate' (welfare) the poor get more, rich pay more (welfare-progressive)

Exactly - everyone from Bill Gates to the bag boy. Everyone gets the same. Fair. And those who spend more, pay more - progressive. And everyone has a choice of when and where to pay the tax.

The Democrats will campaign on increasing the prebate so they can raise twice as much in tax hikes.

Just like they campaign on high taxes for the rich and Earned Income Tax (redistribution) Credits. What's the difference?

and it does not automatically do away with an income tax either.

Please read the bill HR 25. It ceases all income tax withholding and payments. It also provides for introducing legislation to abolish the 16th amendment.
