What does "Ping" mean?

I see so many people asking to be put on the 'ping list', what does that mean?
I also see that you can be 'pinged' if something you are interested in is posted. Are you notified someway?

Ping = Packet InterNet Groper However in this case it's a backronym or bacronym ... a type of acronym that begins as an ordinary word, and is later interpreted as an acronym....
The uses of "Ping" as something to "echo" return or locate predates the internet
