The National Spelling Bee began its first rounds today. All of the action can be followed at: www.spellingbee.com.
Also, the championship rounds will be broadcast live on ABC (for the first time) beginning at 8PM EST Thursday evening.
I'm placing my guess on Speller #238, Samir Patel, from Fort Worth, Texas. He will be worth the price of admission for you to watch tomorrow evening. He was HILARIOUS last year when we participated in the Bee!

I bet my buddy five bucks a thread on FReep about the National Spelling Bee could be turned into a Clinton rant in 8 replies or less
C'mon, I posted the thread and thought his post was funny. The Spelling Bee is a great time for levity with all of the "series" things going on in the world. :-)

I was a speller growing up, and while it was fun for me, I can't imagine what mind-numbing, agonizing boredom it must have been to watch one of those - let alone all of them, as my parents did.

I bet some buffoon would sign up today to make dumb comments he thought were clever.
ROFLOL!!!

Last year, her parent had her stay in her hotel room studying the whole time. Maybe that's why she misspelled a word early this year--so she could enjoy herself. Sounds like she has "stage parents".

They are boring to watch at the local levels, but try following it on the National level. It is actually quite entertaining, especially if you take time to read the kids bios and get to know the "playing field".

Darn, I missed it. Is there a place to view deleted comments?

Her parent are REALLY nice people. The just have a different cultural perspective than most of us.
The Indian folks will rule the spelling bee for years to come because they place so much importance on it.
I mentioned above that my son represented Colorado last year through the Rocky Mountain News. The "Rocky" only allows their winner to compete once at the National level, unlike most sponsors that send kids multiple times.
We actually had Indian parents coming up to us in Washington, D.C. last year asking where we were going to move so that our son could compete at the National level again. We had to explain to them that we were fine with just competing once, and looked forward to experiencing life in other areas. The Indian parents could not understand this...

Did you see the movie "Spellbound"? It was terrific.

The Indians and we who care about spelling are a dying minority.

We haven't watched it yet, but have heard that it is a "Must See!".
I'm not impressed with the trailers that I have seen for "Akeelah and the Bee". It looks like a movie trying to push a social agenda instead of just celebrating a bunch of kids that have worked hard to attain a goal.
To: politicket
I skipped Akeelah as I had the same impression. It's also not an inspirational movie for children when it's rated PG for language.

I was concerned about that too but I enjoyed the movie. There wasn't as much of that as I thought. It was more about a nice teacher/student relationship.

Did anyone see the fabulous movie, Akeela and the Bee?????

That's not true. It's a great movie. It starts out a little "agendaish" but it will leave you weeping by the sheer goodwill in the movie for people of all ethnic backgrounds. I loved it.

In a psych class I took we were taught that there was no correllation between intelligence, IQ, and spelling. There are strong correlations with reading and math, but none with spelling.

The thing that I noticed from last year's Spelling Bee is that almost all of the children were VERY accomplished in music. I thought that was kind of an interesting correlation...don't know if it means anything.

The Texas kids are almost up in Round 3.
Let's see how Samir Patel does...
To: politicket
Samir Patel (Speller #238) got the word: grandrelle and spelled correctly. On to Round #4 for him!
If it is the same as last year they will stop for the day following Round #4. ESPN will begin televising the early rounds tomorrow, and then ABC will begin prime-time championship round coverage at 8PM EST.

Also, the championship rounds will be broadcast live on ABC (for the first time) beginning at 8PM EST Thursday evening. Good, let's put these kids on a pedestal and make them role models instead of the little punks all over the tube in commercials and on sitcoms etc.
