Bird flu strikes fear into Italy's shoppers

Poultry sales in Italy have plunged by more than 50 per cent after bird flu was discovered in a wild swan in Sicily last Friday.

Amid the panic, one driver for a battery chicken farm who had lost his job killed his wife and daughter before cutting his own throat.

Police believe Claudio Robello, 48, of Grezzano, near Verona, was tipped over the edge by being laid off because of falling sales.

He killed his 44-year-old wife and 10-year-old daughter with a knife and hammer in a frenzied attack. His sons, aged 14 and 16, were taken to hospital with severe stab wounds after being found in their bedroom.

Italy was the second European Union nation after Greece to record cases of the disease. Slovenia is awaiting the results of tests on a dead swan found at the weekend.

By yesterday evening, six swans had been found dead from the virus in Italy and a further 16 were being tested.

The agriculture minister said the government was ready to withdraw £12 million worth of poultry products from supermarkets as a precautionary measure.

Trade unions warned that 200,000 jobs were at risk.

I just had Chicken Kiev with rice for dinner. Bird Flu, bird schmu. People are panicking running around with their heads missing and I'm still eating poultry. Guess what? I'm still posting here, knock wood.

If you have money to gamble, this company is a possible bird flu play; but only invest money you can afford to lose on this risky micro-cap: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=embx

I eat turkey myself. Ground turkey thigh burgers.

The most healthy animal protein you can eat. Plus I get to eat an animal that is even dumber than a chicken which adds ammusment value.

I think the bird flu is the icing on the desperation cake. They have no jobs, no prospects and God knows you can't do anything while America is oppressing/imperializing you.

Remember that Eddie Murphy movie "Trading Places?" How did they short the market with the orange juice futures and make a ton of money? If one could predict when the bird flue infests US and Canadian poultry stock there might be a lot of money to be made.

Yup. I bake 5 pounds of chicken daily for the (Katrina) abandoned dogs around here. If I hear about bird flu here, that will stop. (In fact, I have just decided to begin wearing gloves when I prepare that chicken)
