VANITY - Rebuild New Orleans as the City of Tomorrow!
Self

Posted on 09/21/2005 6:11:09 AM PDT by Puddleglum

Heck, if the government really is going to spend $200 billion to rebuild New Orleans, they might as well rebuild it as the city of tomorrrow complete with kelp farms, electricity generated by tides, public transportation light as a cloud and efficient and almost noiseless, parks that are nice and safe and clean. It could be a proof-of-concept city for all those innovations you see in the middle of "Popular Science" that are always "just around the corner." I draw the line at dog-walking robots and the bubble dome (for now), but you get my drift, I suppose.

Well, I am half-joking and half serious. I know if I had $200 billion to rebuild a city, I would try a few new things out, especially in regards to noise pollution, light pollution, energy efficiency, and urban design (proximity of neighborhoods to work, etc).

Any takers? Anything you'd like to see?

First, you have to jack the city up by about 15 feet; then....

I wouldn't spend a dime on it.

The enviro "experts" were worried about all the toxic water the flood brought?
well, it looks like it getting a wash and rinse. That should clean up the place pretty good.

It's below sealevel.

New Orleans should not suffer a fate any different than Times Beach, Missouri or Valmeyer, Illinois, or any of a myriad of small towns and settlements built too closely to the Mississippi and it's tributaries over the centuries.

Preserve the "Crescent", if you really gotta' do that, but relocate everybody and everything. Bring in the gators and some subtropical crocidiles. Build a big fence. Nature will take care of the rest.

Don't you need forward thinking people and people of tomorrow to have or build a city of tomorrow?

Seems most in NO were part of the past and not smart enough to get out...

We'll just throw the first $100 billion into the alluvial silt in the form of pennies to take care of that. That leaves plenty left over for bubble cars and the moving sidewalks.

Build everything 20 feet above the surface and let people use paddle boats for transportation.

Blimp traffic for cross-town jaunts or trips up to Baton Rouge is a nice touch (provided every seat has a laptop port).

Remember when they tried to make the Kansas City School System into the multicultural system of the future? Throwing "unlimited" government money (actually, the people's money) into solving social problems has worked in the following cases:

Heh.

As much as I'd like one, can you imagine the chaos if the terrible drivers that are currently earthbound got turned loose in the wild blue yonder?
