What a pile of crap Live 8 turned out to be. I tried to watch it, but I couldn't make it happen.
My wretching began when Will Smith showed his stupid face onscreen. He begged us all to make a difference, because "every 3 seconds, someone dies from starvation in Africa." Bull !!!!!!!!!! Has anyone done the math on this lie? I have. That would amount to 10, 521,000 deaths PER YEAR from starvation. That's based on a continental population of 850 million. That's about 1 1/2% of the population dying from starvation. If this were the case, it would stop itself when it reached it's fulcrum, which it would do quickly.
I've also read projections of 30 million dead from AIDS annually in Africa by 2010. So, 40 million dead annually from these two things? No friggin' way. In ten years, nearly half the population would be wiped out. An immense lie has been thrown at us concerning the starvation, and maybe the AIDS number too, I haven't looked into that thoroughly.
Back at Live 8, I was further sickened when I started thinking about very rich celebrities backing this cause. They were transported in limo's, stayed in 4 star hotels and ate the absolutely best food. How about sharing in Africa's misery and eating rice sparingly you POS? How about backing up your actions, instead of using the "do as I say, not as I do" philosophy? Here's a quote from a Philadelphia Inquirer article about the food laid out for the stars; "Chris Tucker and his family were also there, among the celebrities who ate crab spring rolls, dumplings, calamari salad, and sushi. Chefs Scott Swiderski and Michael Schulson, working in a field kitchen, brought in tons of food. Starr brought in chef Masaharu Morimoto, famous from his appearances on TV's Iron Chef." TONS OF FOOD!! For a few people. They probably threw away enough food to feed an African village for a week. Yeah, they have a clue what starving people are about.
One of the tenets of the Live 8 group is that every one of the G8 countries should give .7 percent of national GDP to Africa as aid? EXCUSE ME?? For America that would be 770 BILLION dollars!! Even a country like France would have to cough up 9.8 billion. What is wrong with these people?
I'm reminded of the '80's, when the left's cause of the day was homelessness. Some lib group put out a figure of how many people die per day because of homelessness, and though I don't remember the number, when you did the math it would extinguish the population of America in less than 10 years, even taking into account re-population. But nobody called them on it, as nobody is calling these loons on this one. I guess it speaks to a dumbed down population that has zero ability to think for itself.
Wouldn't it have been easier just to list the performers and leave it at that?
Yeah, but this was about spewing the venom I've felt for three days. It was therapuetic for me.

Ben and Jerry's ice cream used to say that animal and plant species went extinct every 20 seconds and that's been at least 10 years since I stood in front of my grocer's diary case and ranted and raved about the same things you are. BTW, that's about 16 million extinct plants and animals ago.

Anyways, she says all the hoopla about starving kids and AIDS run amok is horseshit (to put it bluntly). She said camera crews will go out into the middle of nowhere where there are maybe a few villages that are starving and make it sound like the whole continent is dieing.
Those are reasonable figures for a stone age population that lives to 35 and reproduces like rabbits where only half of them live to be 2 years old.
The question is one of ethical accountability. Liberals believe these deaths are our fault, because we dare to keep that which we own and earned through blood, sweat, and labor. This view, from idle rich celebrities....
We can only help and point the way. Only Africans can solve the core problems. Warlords, genocide, civil wars, very bad belief systems about sex. Simple clean water is a major problem, kids die from diarrhea, simply putting water in clear plastic bottles for the sun to kill the bugs would help immensely. I dont know all the whys and hows. Im sure im pretty ignorant. But I know one thing for sure. Liberal guilt will never solve the problems, blaming the successful countries will not either. And that is mostly what these things are about.
But it's pretty bad in large part because of the horrific governments those countries have. And those same governments will be filtering/siphoning/blocking whatever aid we send there, just as they have for the last four decades.
But I pretty much agree with the rest of your post. A lot of celebrities desperate to look and feel relevant.

As for the GDP argument....I heard today that donations from private US citizens were 16x greater than private donations from the other countries. You never hear that argument when GDP percentages are brought up with respect to African donations. Bottom line: Americans don't have to be coerced at gunpoint (i.e. don't pay taxes, go to jail, try to leave jail, get shot) in order to give. That can be argued as a good or a bad thing ultimately, but in the arguments of our detractors it should be enough to shut them up.

You obviously weren't paying attention. Live 8 was the most important thing in the history of the world.
Send more money so Mugabe can use it to buy bulldozers to tear down more homes.
