Witness Says She Was Told to Cut Clinton Gala Charge
NY Times ^ | May 19, 2005 | Leslie Eaton

LOS ANGELES, May 18 - Thousands of dollars in expenses, including more than $1,000 worth of rose petals, disappeared from a budget for a fund-raising gala on orders of David F. Rosen, who was the national finance director for Hillary Rodham Clinton's 2000 Senate race, a witness testified here today.

The witness, a party planner named Bretta J. Nock, testified at the trial of Mr. Rosen, who is charged with causing false filings to be made to the Federal Election Commission by underreporting the cost of an August 2000 event, called the Hollywood Gala Salute to President William Jefferson Clinton.

In the first testimony that Mr. Rosen deliberately fudged the figures for the event, Ms. Nock said that after it was over, he told her that the overall costs in her budget had to be lower. She could not recall if Mr. Rosen had told her which items to cut, she said, but vendors had already been paid.

"The budget was adjusted to reflect a lower amount," she said. She did not protest, she said. "It wasn't my place."

Mr. Rosen, who is expected to take the stand in his own defense, has said through his lawyers that he was misled about the costs of the event by its organizers, who were involved in a now-defunct Internet company, Stan Lee Media. One of those men, Aaron Tonken, hired Ms. Nock. The jury learned for the first time today that Mr. Tonken is in federal prison for fraud involving events he put on for charities.

According to the government, Ms. Nock's cuts eliminated almost $29,000 from the $35,000 that she had charged in an earlier budget sent to Mr. Rosen; the lower budget was sent to campaign officials in Washington, according to the government. The true overall cost of the event...

Best line:

a travel agent, said that more than $31,000 was spent on a private plane for Cher, her entourage and the band Sugar Ray. Muhammad Ali was also transported in a smaller plane, which cost about $24,750.

But the organizers of the gala did economize in one way, Mr. Krausen said; they decided against hiring a bigger and more expensive plane that could also have accommodated Rosa Parks, the civil rights figure. She did not attend

Rosa Parks wasn't that big...

This whole deal was the next step in the 1994 Clinton/Marx retroactive tax increase.

Once they got away with THAT, they moved on to retroactive extortion--they must have taken lessons from Jesse and Al and Arafat--or VICE VERSA....

I can tell you that, as an event planner, I account for every single penny. I would never cook a book or twist a total for a client. They get the whole, itemized accounting. What they do with it once they have it is up to them, but when it leaves my hot little hand, it's itemized to the nth degree.

I bet that Cher and Hillary sat in the front of the plane, Rosa Parks sat in the back!

If she had half a brain she would have put her protest on record before she made any changes.

This is the best of the worst. . .wish it would get a little more play. Seem Drudge could have picked up on this; but maybe he likes Cher (?)

I can understand; in a way. . .Ali's needing, perhaps. . .easier transport; but the rest of the entertainment sludge; no way.

Meantime, not a Democrat there, missed Rosa.

We have known for a long time that 'charity' in Hollywood is not about giving; but rather recieving. And boy, that 'charity PR, goes a long way' to enriching their pockets while enhancing their image as compassionate Liberals.

Liberals are as authentic as their last face-lift.

"while enhancing their image as compassionate Liberals"

Yeah, they refer to Muhammed Ali and Rosa Parks like they are furniture, or a sideshow attraction. Look at me, I have Rosa Parks at my party. Even better than pony rides, a magician or a clown.

"Even better than pony rides, a magician or a clown."

Of course, the truth for these people; is that they really do prefer Bozo. . .and the pony.

And everyone of these celebs;Libs. . . has his own 'magic act'.

The lis would have made her sit in the back of the plane.

So, are you saying they were going to put Ms. Parks at the back of the plane? Hmmm.

I always thought Cher was creepy, even when I was a kid in the early '70's and had no idea of her left wing dementia. And I cannot stomach her voice. I actually feel the same way about Bette Midler, Liza Minelli, and Bernadette Peters. I cannot stand to watch or listen to any of them.
