Thracian Owner of Gold Mask Axe-Chopped

The owner of the ancient gold mask – Thracian king Seutus III – has been chopped after his death, Bulgarian experts found, proving a theory for Thracians' funeral rituals. Photo by Kameliya Atanasova (Sofia News Agency)

Lifestyle: 17 May 2005, Tuesday.

The Thracian king Seutus III, whose gold mask was unearthed in 2004 by Bulgarian archaeologists, has been chopped with an axe after his death, an expert research showed.

According to archaeologists this discovery is pure sensation because it proves the theory that ancient Thracians used to chop into pieces their rulers' bodies and buried them in different places.

The discovery was made after an examination of the king's bones, which were found in a tomb near the Shipka Peak, southern Bulgaria in 2004.

Only his legs and lower jaw were found together with the 680 g gold mask.

In the summer of 2004 a group of Bulgarian archaeologists came upon an astounding founding of a whole Thracian treasure, including a gold ring, ornate silver, bronze and ceramic pieces. The gold mask, which was also found there, proved to be 2,500-year-old.

The whole collection will be displayed for the first time on Wednesday in the Archaeological Museum in Sofia.

Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov and the Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg will attend the opening of the new exposition marking the 100th anniversary of the museum.

theory that ancient Thracians used to chop into pieces their rulers' bodies and buried them in different places.

Why is that such a shock? The Polish Catholics wanted JPII's heart buried (or displayed) in Poland. Apparently it is (was) a fairly common practice for those who made it to Saint status.

Every important Buddhist Temple has a relic of someone, with the highest order temples having Buddha relics (hair, teeth, bones, etc. ) This "Division of the body" was done at Buddha's instruction. So, yeah, it was a very common practice. Ancestor worship practices in China and in Turkey are also kind of interesting though, today, we find them rather gross. Actually, I would feel uncomfortable with Great Grandpa buried beneath my floor.

I guess he was a real cut-up.

Unfortunately not until he died.

You probably wouldn't like riding in my truck,
my father is in the glove box.
I like to talk to him at times.

Reminds me of that old John Prine Song:

Please don't bury me
Down in that cold cold ground
No, I'd druther have "em" cut me up
And pass me all around
Throw my brain in a hurricane
And the blind can have my eyes
And the deaf can take both of my ears
If they don't mind the size
Give my stomach to Milwaukee
If they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box
Just get "em" out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms
Look out! I've got your nose
Sell my heart to the junkman
And give my love to Rose
Give my feet to the footloose
Careless, fancy free
Give my knees to the needy
Don't pull that stuff on me
Hand me down my walking cane
It's a sin to tell a lie
Send my mouth way down south
And kiss my ass goodbye

I could settle for that.

It beats the daylights out of having your embalmed MIL standing in the corner of the room with a lampshade on her head, LEDs screwed into her eye sockets, and a lamp cord coming out of her backside to plug her into the wall.

Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg ...

While this thread has done its usual FR spiral down, nonetheless, it is worth pointing out that this great king's grave and Mask have been found when the current Prime Minister "Simeon Saxe-Coburg" is also the rightful King of Bulgaria, King Simeon.

I don’t know. The great philosopher Curly Howard once opined that a “hot stake” is better than a “cold chop.”
