Polls Show Split on Social Security: AARP Manipulation Exposed Again!
Washington Times ^ | 4/4/05 | ceoinva

A battle of the Social Security polls has developed, with supporters of private accounts accusing the AARP of distorting the issue when polling its members and the AARP charging that supporters of the president's plan continually gloss over possible pitfalls in its surveys... Charlie Jarvis, chairman and chief executive of USA Next -- a conservative senior citizens group that sees itself as a foil to the AARP -- called the AARP poll "despicable," saying its "emotional language" was designed to "guide them to a preselected answer." "It's a classic push poll," Mr. Jarvis said. "Their polls are completely manipulated surveys intended to reinforce views they have politically. For anyone to believe anything in any AARP poll would be a mistake." USA Next commissioned its own poll in February that showed that 65 percent of respondents approve of private accounts if they are voluntary and if there is a "guaranteed safety net" in the event the accounts pay out less than the government can deliver -- which are the key elements of the most popular reform bills being talked about in Congress. "AARP doesn't ever ask questions relative to any specific plan," Mr. Jarvis said. "It's because they don't want the answer, which is positive, even among many seniors."

I saw an AARP ad that was over the top awful. Very deceptive and inflammatory.

Bill Crystal reported last week on Brit Hume's show that there is no way any SS bill will be passed without the approval of AARP which, by the way, he describes as no more than a club for folks who want their discount program.

AARP is just an insurance company. Nothing more.

Are you talking about the "plumber" ad? That one is a disgraceful piece of propoganda.

AARP was also described as organized years ago to transfer $$$ from young workers to older retired people and has out-lived that purpose.

Social Security reform wouldn't affect senior citizens anyway, so why should AARP get involved at all? The reform is to help the next generation from "eating cat food."

Why would the AARP want the kids to grow old with that kind of poverty?
Could it just be AARP fearing a loss of political power and damning the young to the same fates as those eating cat food and in poverty now?
Could they be acting out of self concern, rather than a real concern for the American people?
D'ya think? D'ya think they might be trying to protect them selves?
Huh? Huh?

AARP is just an insurance company. Nothing more

Actually, for many (most?) of its members, it's a source of travel-related discounts. Nothing more.

AARP seems to have adopted Farm Bureau's format, becomming a profitable spokesman for a particular group while acting like a non-profit organization.

AARP has become a liberal organization that keeps people dependent on the federal government. Social Security reform would allow the people to free themselves from the bondage.
To the liberals, it would turn back their socialist agenda by decades. They'll fight tooth and nail to keep the people financially imprisoned by the feds, and I hope they lose that battle.

...to transfer $$$ from young workers to older retired people and has out-lived that purpose.

And this is exactly what social security is... a transfer payment from workers to non-working. It is immoral and wrong. It should not be reformed, it should be killed. And I am one of the boomers approaching retirement (age 51.95).

When people start calling it what it really is then maybe we will have a chance of doing what it right.

If there is a split now, that doesn't bode well for the ultimately continuation of the status quo. As older people die, and workers who won't collect until after the system goes bust become the majority, the voter support for the status quo is bound to weaken.

Bill Crystal also said that they are the most cash-flush non-profit on the planet.
