The lanquid voices of NPR's ALL THINGS CONSIDERED were celebrating the defeat of longtime conservative Republican Phil Crane. This information was mentioned twice during a twenty minute span of covering the outcome of the election.
While many of us would consider that anyone who had served over three decades in the House had served long enough we would have to make an exception for Phil Crane who has been one of the greats of conservative activism. He is also a very nice fellow, a handsome man, has a great sense of humor, and goes the extra mile to make us mortals feel comfortable.
Now that Phil is no longer tied to the House. Let's hope that the administration has the wisdom to tap him for an important post.
I never heard of him until he lost.
Nothing compares to being rid of Dasshole
how funny, they have sooooo little to talk about!
I allowed my bad, gloating-side self to listen to NPR for about 20 minutes last night and this morning. They have a very bitter taste in their smug, politically correct mouthes.
If you never heard of him then you must not follow politics. Elected in 1969, he is the most senior Republican in the House of Representatives and a conservative.
Even though NPR recommended it, I still think hiring Crane in the Bush WH is a good idea.
Dear Mr. Crane,
Thank you for your many years of service. I am pleased to offer you a position with the Administration on Aging.
Best known for his opposition of Carter's Panama Canal giveaway, he also ran for President in 1980.
I've been a regular poster at this site since 1998, which I think says SOMETHING about whether I follow politics or not, and I never heard of the guy. Sorry.
i am not OPENLY gloating, but i am quietly, steadily, gloating til it hurts, as my hub said!
Be nice if some freeper could give us a little background on Crane and how come he lost.
the bonehead move of having Alan Keyes (the guy takes himself too seriously ... and I'm a conserative republican saying that) as the senate candidate may have hurt here.
"Even though NPR recommended it, I still think hiring Crane in the Bush WH is a good idea."
Oops! NPR didn't recommend it of course. Sorry that my poor posting style misled. That poor prose was mine concerning NPR's coverage.
I follow politics and never heard of him --- this is the blame of the RNC for thier mealy-mouth bowing before the dims on the house floor.
Hopefully after THIS win they may get a little backbone that isn't so damned YELLOW!
They are SUPPOSED to be Republicans!
I think Phil was considered a major conservative leader back in the 1970s and 80s before the Gingrich group rose to power. So Phil was less visible after that be he was always a stalwart conservative. At the 1979 YAF conference I attended, a small but vocal group of young people were very dedicated to Crane's run for president. They even preferred him to Gov Reagan. So Phil Crane was quite a hero to many conservatives for a long time.
The guy didn't register with me either, so you're in good company.
Not much light for any Republicans these days in Illinois. Certainly the Kerry and Obama margins there worked against Crane in his district.
Thanks for the reply. Sounds like he's the type of guy who "W" should take care of.
They should call the show "All LIBERAL things considered with a liberal bias"
