If Republicans nominate a strong conservative, it could hurt them on Election Day. A lot.
The Washington Post's Monkey Cage ^ | September 25, 2015 | Matthew Atkinson and Darin DeWitt

In June 2014, Senator Ted Cruz told The New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin this:

It is amazing that the wisdom of the chattering class to the Republicans is always, always, always ‘Surrender your principles and agree with the Democrats. That’s been true for my entire lifetime. The chattering classes have consistently said, ‘You crazy Republicans have to give up on what you believe and become more like Democrats.’ And, I would note, every time Republicans do that we lose.

Cruz went on:

And what does the entire D.C. Republican consulting class say? ‘In 2016, we need another establishment moderate!’ Hasn’t worked in four decades. ‘But next time will be the time!’

To Cruz, the logic is simple: more moderate Republicans have lost some presidential elections, so the party should nominate someone less moderate. It’s an unsurprising view from a guy who is on the conservative flank of the party and is now a presidential candidate.

It’s also a view that is largely wrong. Political science research shows that ideological moderation actually is rewarded at the ballot box in House elections and presidential elections. The same thing is true in the 2016 presidential race. In fact, we estimate that in 2016, the electoral penalty for choosing a true believer rather than a moderate is a 23-percentage point decline in the probability of winning the general election....

I just posted exactly the opposite of this on the “replacement” thread.

If we don’t get a pitbull conservative as Speaker to encourage the true base to get out there and vote, there’s a good chance we’ll see Speaker Pelosi again come 2017.

How would Speaker Pelosi differ from Speaker Boehner?

That’s kinda my point. If the caucus elects another of Boehners lackies, the base stays home and Democrats win.

This is a chance to completely change the landscape of tnext years election.

Wish I had faith that they won’t blow it.

Then, given the politics of WaPo, wouldn't this be exactly what they want? Why do they always champion milquetoast RINOs for the GOP nomination? Individuals that they NEVER support during the general election. Why don't they support conservatives to win the Republican nomination, if they think it will hurt the party so much?

Surrender your principles. Win an election. Big deal! You have lost what’s most important.

I think the true base voted last time, but were suckered. If we have nothing but spineless, play along to get along seniles, what can we do? Start another party? What outcome would be any different? I for one will vote as usual but I know my vote won’t count if it even gets through the voting machine. I’m so depressed.

In a normal year, Goldwater might’ve won. Months after a popular president was assassinated? Not a chance. Lincoln couldn’t have beat LBJ that year.

If the writers are Demos - ignore - it’s divide and conquer.
If the writers are Repubs - are they going to take their balls and go home?

Yeah, far better the Republicans should nominate a lukewarm name-only conservative. Or better yet, a Democrat!

That would REALLY help their chances on election day.

Pelosi actually got things done - Stuff we didn't like but she got it done! Unlike Boner who only folded at the ante.

For all intents and purposes, Pelosi still was the Speaker of House, might as well have been.
