I thought it was just me with this suspicion but from comments below the videos of the "WW2 Stories" channel on YouTube, I see others are having the same thought. Namely that the supposed diaries, mostly from German soldiers, being read never existed and are entirely generated by AI.
One reason for this suspicion is we never see NAMES attached to the diaries. I mean, I would like to do some research to at least put a face to the person writing the diaries but no such luck. Also all the diaries sound like they were written by the same person. Yes, they are highly detailed but the tone in all of the diaries supposedly by different people all sound the same.
Anyway, just judging from these "diaries" it appears that AI is much more advanced than I previously imagined. Their big drawback is that despite the enormous amount of detail, they all sound alike.
It was funny to read stories where somebody got what they deserved for being douches and whatnot. However, since I think most of them are now just AI generated, I won’t read them now.
I like Mark Felton’s channel but his channel is real with REAL NAMES. I got suspicious when no names were attached to the “WW2 Stories” diaries being narrated. Oh, and the fact it sounded like the same guy in all the diaries wrote them all.
I’ve seen a few of these videos. One really bothered me.
The “diarist” was in the German army. His unit was caught up in a chaotic retreat on the Eastern front. It was late 1944, if I recall correctly. They came upon a German supply depot. The officer in charge refused to distribute any food without orders from above.
So someone in the diarist’s unit shot the supply officer. Then everyone just took what food they wanted. And that food was richly described. Smoked hams, wine, etc.
I dunno. Was the German army so undisciplined by then that they would shoot supply officers? Or was this all due to an AI with a good imagination?
I am not sure about AI generated about all of them but they do have more than a passing resemblance to "Dear Penthouse Forum," letters.
Some of the stories are real and come from published books. Others, I can find nothing on the internet. The current story about a German officer commanding Grenadier Regiment 308 is based on actual history, but the name used in the video does not match up to the name of the real commander of that regiment, so I believe it is part fact and part fiction.
No names used for the diary authors is a big giveaway. You can hear quite a few names used but strangely missing the one who wrote it all down.
Which is exactly what an AI does. Mix fact with fiction. Plus how does one channel get access to so many diaries that I never heard about before?
I would agree.
One other thing, I listened to one diary supposedly written many years after WW2 but it had ENORMOUS detail. Waaaay too much detail to have been remembered years later. That was another tell that these are AI generated.
I watch the one about Eastern front diaries. They say who wrote the diaries
Hey, those “Dear Penthouse Forum” letters are legit! I submitted one, and it got published.
It was a dark and stormy night. My car had broken down on a country road, so I walked through the rain to the nearest farmhouse. To my surprise, the farmhouse had been rented by the lovely Jennifer Aniston. She was alone, and frightened by the storm.
I’d like to say more here, but Free Republic has its rules.
Sure I believe you. You probably had your wife, Morgan Fairchild, along as a witness.
Who has time to write such detailed diaries in a major war? I called BS when I first saw/listened to one.
Ha! I see that you are also a fan of Tommy Flanagan.
Cheers!
Reminds me of the many Amazon product reviews I’ve read that all sound alike:
“This is a GREAT product. It meets my needs. It is an outstanding product and highly recommend you buy this product.”
I think I read something about that somewhere else, or something similar. Maybe in, “The Forgotten Soldier” or a book like it. If you haven’t read it, do. It’s one giant diary from a man of Franco-German descent who was drafted in 1943 or 1944 at sixteen into the Wehrmacht, and filled with stories similar to the one you mention.
All it takes is ONE undisciplined jerk who’s starving, as they most assuredly would have been at the Eastern Front at that time, sprinkled with panic, and that’s what you’d get. 3-5 days without food makes people lose their proverbial collective sh¡t.
That one I believe could have happened. Whether it did or not though is another matter.
It’s not usually during that they’re so detailed. It’s after, a person cataloguing their experiences, like, “The Forgotten Soldier”. Excellent book.
Next you’ll be telling us that Sven Hassel’s memoirs weren’t true.
I’ve got Sager’s book, one such scene was crossing the Dnieper while retreating from the Russians as the Gestapo was looking for German slackers and deserters...it’s featured in Oxfords’ Book of Military Anecdotes, quite a read...
Russians probably gonna do it again...
