U.S. officials charged an Uzbek citizen in Idaho with providing bomb-making knowledge and other support to an Islamist militant group, knowing that it would be used in an attack, authorities said on Thursday. Fazliddin Kurbanov, 30, a national of Uzbekistan living legally in Idaho, was arrested in Boise and faces a three-count grand jury indictment in Idaho and a single-count indictment in Utah, prosecutors said. They said Kurbanov provided information and money to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which the United States has designated as a foreign terrorist organization. The group supports establishing strict Islamic rule in Uzbekistan. Authorities said...

From a concert pianist in Korea to a woman suffering from depression in Germany to schoolchildren in Japan, Zach Sobiech touched millions of people around the world with "Clouds," his song of farewell to family and friends. Sobiech was an "extraordinary young man who had the profound ability to make everyone feel better about themselves," said Dan Seeman, vice president and market manager for KS95/Hubbard Radio in St. Paul, who initiated Sobiech's recording of the song. "He embraced his life and challenged each of us to do the same." Sobiech died early Monday at his home in Lakeland, 3-1/2 years...

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula deserves a place in American history. He is the first person in this country jailed for violating Islamic anti-blasphemy laws. You won’t find that anywhere in the charges against him, of course. As a practical matter, though, everyone knows that Nakoula wouldn’t be in jail today if he hadn’t produced a video crudely lampooning the prophet Muhammad.

The content on the new paid channels will be in addition to the millions of videos viewers watch for free on YouTube. It’s not clear whether the paid videos will come with advertising. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Financial Times reported earlier that viewers would be charged as little as $1.99 a month for subscriptions. **snip In January, Sarah Crank, 14, received death threats after testifying before the Maryland state senate. She testified: Hi, I’m Sarah Crank. Today’s my 14th birthday, and it would be the best birthday present ever if you would vote “no” on gay marriage. I really feel bad for the kids who have two parents of the same gender. Even though some kids think it’s fine, they have no idea what kind of wonderful experiences they miss out on. I don’t want more kids to get confused about what’s right and okay. I really don’t want to grow up in a...

“Over the next five years,” says technology fortuneteller Daniel Burrus, “we are going to see a transformation in how we sell, market, communicate, elaborate, innovate, train and educate people.” Burrus has been following and (accurately) predicting technology trends for more than 30 years. He says when he was “talking about social media in the early ’90s, before the first Web browser.” When he talks, the technology industry listens. So what kind of “transformation” is Burrus talking about now? He starts by explaining a change in marketing. When the Monty Python franchise was lagging on DVD sales a few years back,...

A YouTube video that features a teenage girl delivering a poem about why homosexuality is not God’s design for relationships has gone viral, while also meeting opposition from homosexual advocates who have criticized the production. The video, entitled Rated T for Tolerance, was posted last Summer, but for an unknown reason, has suddenly garnered a significant amount of attention. In the short, two-minute production, a teenage girl is seen standing in a wooded area sharing a spoken word production on the issue of homosexuality from a Christian viewpoint. “Don’t propagate your hate because I have a higher standard on who...

If you follow Monderno, especially on Facebook, you probably know that Colion is a good friend of mine. If I told you that him joining the NRA was a surprise to me, I wouldn’t be telling you the truth. For quite some time now I have been looking forward to this news getting out. To see why, let’s start by examining what this means for the NRA. What This Means for the NRA The United States, gun control, and the NRA are all at a critical impasse right now. Our right to keep and bear arms is under attack in...

For almost two years, intelligence services around the world tried to uncover the identity of an Internet hacker who had become a key conduit for al-Qaeda. The savvy, English-speaking, presumably young webmaster taunted his pursuers, calling himself Irhabi -- Terrorist -- 007. He hacked into American university computers, propagandized for the Iraq insurgents led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and taught other online jihadists how to wield their computers for the cause.

An Egyptian court ordered the suspension of online video service YouTube for a month on Saturday for broadcasting a film insulting the Prophet Mohammad, state media reported. The country's administrative court ordered the ministries of communication and investment to block YouTube, owned by Google, inside Egypt because it had carried the film "Innocence of Muslims," said state news agency MENA. The 13-minute video, billed as a film trailer and made in the United States, provoked a torrent of anti-American unrest in Egypt, Libya and dozens of other Muslim countries in September. The video depicts the Prophet as a fool and...

SNIPPET: "Social media is no longer simply a fun way to share updates on the harmless idiosyncrasies of our lives. It can undermine national security, and there ought to be a more robust discussion between the Bay Area technology world and Washington on what to do about it. Cyber-terrorism, especially the potential for electronic tampering with U.S. industrial or military installations, is a paramount national security threat that Washington is working to forestall. We're all working to protect our accounts from hackers. But the cyber-threat getting far less public attention involves the social media networks we use every day and the...

LOS ANGELES — Fuming for two months in a jail cell here, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula has had plenty of time to reconsider the wisdom of making “Innocence of Muslims,” his crude YouTube movie trailer depicting the Prophet Muhammad as a bloodthirsty, philandering thug. Does Mr. Nakoula now regret the footage? After all, it fueled deadly protests across the Islamic world and led the unlikely filmmaker to his own arrest for violating his supervised release on a fraud conviction. Not at all. In his first public comments since his incarceration soon after the video gained international attention in September, Mr. Nakoula...

As of Sunday morning, Gangnam Style had more than 815 million views while Baby was a few hundred thousand short of 805 million. Bieber’s video has been at the top since July 2010 and remains hugely popular with as many as 500,000 views a day. Yet that’s nothing compared with how quickly PSY’s video rose to the top. Lots of searches for the video were first...

Ed touched on this earlier, but I wanted to tease it out a little. One reason to look forward to a Republican president would have been that people might start finding stuff like this outrageous again: The California man behind an anti-Muslim film that roiled the Islamic world was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for violating his probation stemming from a 2010 bank fraud conviction by lying about his identity.U.S. District Court Judge Christina Snyder immediately sentenced Mark Basseley Youssef after he admitted to four of the eight alleged violations, including obtaining a fraudulent California driver's license. Prosecutors agreed...

Can anyone smarter than me help me figure this out? on two computers in our house, both running windows vista... when we do a "search" for video on youtube, we get a browser full of "JUNK"...I mean, literally, a page full of letters and boxes....looks kind of like this: dkjxxxxxxxxx kf xxxxxxxxxxxxx Where the "x"s are little rectangles. Weird. I have signed off of my account, and the phenomenon still occurs. When I do a "google" search, that doesn't happen...just on youtube. Any ideas?

A shaky YouTube video of a voter registration effort outside a Colorado Springs grocery store led the county's elections boss to clarify Sunday that campaign volunteers aren’t on the government payroll. The incident caught on video shows an encounter between a patron and a young female volunteer who was apparently working to make sure voters backing Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney made it to the polls. The problem: The young woman, after some head-scratching, says her work to boost the GOP turnout is funded by the county clerk.

We might be facing the most embarrassing moment in the history of human civilization. A couple of decades from now, some history book might appear with the following entry: “World War III Sparked by YouTube Video.” It’s a silly pretext that could easily be a story line for a “South Park” episode, but in this case, truth is stranger than fiction. If you buy into the ridiculous media reports, you’re supposed to believe that angry Muslims in Egypt, Libya, and throughout the Middle East exploded into deadly violence on Sept. 11 in reaction to a YouTube video they found insulting....
