Volcanic eruptions and Pink Floyd: Inside Europe’s ‘Little Ice Age’ mystery
Courier Tribune ^ | 4-5-2023 | Mark Waghorn

Europe's mysterious "Little Ice Age" has been traced back to a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia - thanks to Pink Floyd.

It lasted centuries and led to the Thames Frost fairs, when the river froze over for months at a time - turning it into a skating rink.

A generally warm medieval period was followed by a mostly cold spell - from the 14th to the 19th Centuries.

The weather phenomenon has baffled climatologists for decades.

A study - inspired by the 70s rock legends' Dark Side of the Moon - now shows it was triggered by a catastrophic eruption in 1257.

The evidence comes from historical observations of lunar eclipses between 1100 and 1300 - recorded by monks.

Lead author Dr. Sebastien Guillet, of Geneva University, Switzerland, said: "I was listening to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album when I realized the darkest lunar eclipses all occurred within a year or so of major volcanic eruptions.

"Since we know the exact days of the eclipses, it opened the possibility of using the sightings to narrow down when the eruptions must have happened.”

Up to 20,000 souls lost their lives when Mount Samalas on Lombok blew.

Columns of ash soared miles into the atmosphere. Lava flows buried much of the island - and crossed the sea to neighboring Sumbawa.

Co-author Professor Clive Oppenheimer, of Cambridge University, said: "It rivals the famous 1815 eruption of Tambora that brought on 'the year without a summer'."

The eclipses produce visible 'veils' of dust that reduce solar radiation - enabling the international team to rank their color and brightness.

They told us it was the absence of sunspots and called it the Maunder Minimum.

Uh, the effects from one volcanic eruption lasted 5 centuries. I’m through the bullshit flag on that one.

Multiple eruptions, which the global community would not have connected to any particular weather patterns.

Since there WAS no global community.

The LIA was caused by a lengthy grand solar minimum, actually several minimums in a row, coupled with the normal increased volcanic activity that occurs during solar minimums and the changes that occur to the solar & terrestrial magnetic fields.

The last named minimum period was the Centennial Minimum, approx 1890 to 1930. Then decades of warmer climate until now.

The earth is now in the beginning decade of the modern minimum, named the Eddy Minimum, with decades longer to run.

Yes, the article starts out with "Europe's mysterious "Little Ice Age" has been traced back to a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia but then further reading speculates a period of 200 years during which 5 large eruptions may have occurred. However, the named culprit here, Mount Samalas, uncorked in 1257. The Little Ice Age is generally understood to have begun in 1303. The "delay" is not explained, nor is the duration of the effect.

Thank you for the correct info but seriously this really needs to be called the Al Gore Minimum ;-)

“Uh, the effects from one volcanic eruption lasted 5 centuries. I’m through the bullshit flag on that one.”

Never forget the following.

1. Hot summer = Global Warming
2. Cool summer = Global Warming
3. Floods = Global Warming
4. Drought = Global Warming
5. Ice Age = Global Warming
6. End of Ice Age = Global Warming (this one is true but due to orbital mechanics in all probability)
7. Covid = Global Warming
8. All diseases = Global Warming
9. Earthquakes = Global Warming
10. My ex wife running around on me due to Global Warming.
I obviously was not hot enough for her and did not have enough global warming in me. I admit #10 is a scientific stretch of logic but I assure you 1-9 are proven science via Al Gore “Scientist in Chief and Pig.”

/Sarcasm exception #10
