I disagree.. you are natural born if you are born to a citizen parent (after 1972) regardless of where you are born. Part of the reason this clause was even added was probably to protect the citizen children of diplomats and soldiers overseas.

For example, at the time this was promulgated Thomas Jefferson was ambassador in France: If his wife (or Sally Hemmings) had a child while there, they would be ‘natural born citizens.’

I believe that former Louisiana Governor Piyush "Bobby" Jindal did the same thing in 2012. Neither of his parents were citizens when he was born, and he was being named as a potential Presidential candidate until he said no.

Maybe, but she’s been a citizen of the US for 51 years and a over or of her home state. Pretty sure she’s got solid American loyalty, but if you want to doubt that, go ahead. I’m of German heritage and proud of it……but I don’t want dual citizenship.

Actually, the rule in the 18th century was that both parents must be citizens or subjects and must be married.

Otherwise, the bastard offspring of sailors visiting ports or Kenyan students would be "natural born" citizens.

After 1972. Seriously??? There has not been one law, statute or supreme setting precedent to alter what constitutes ‘natural born citizenship’. The founding fathers gave NONE power or authority to alter the literal meaning…

I do not know why people get so hung up on the NBC issue. Not even our founding fathers who wrote the Constitution clearly understood what they were thinking they wanted to do. So an Amendment was necessary. (14th)

We can have the discussions forever--in my mind, she is not a natural born citizen. She was an anchor baby. I think her parents were actually illegals at the time she was born. Obama had one citizen parent, he was born in the US, or at least there is not indisputeable evidence otherwise. Too bad the laws were not clearer and citizens have no apparent standing to challenge things, so we get foreigners running that shouldn't. Consider Lyn' Ted and Little Marco, as other examples. I'll skip them all.

And this goes without saying that she'd get trounced just as solidly as Lyn' Ted and Little Marco. Her candidacy is simply DOA.

Somrone born in USA is not necessarily a natural born citizen, even if ( as is usually the case) they’re American citizens.

The term natural born citizen is a legal term of many centuries’ scholarship. And It definitely does involve parental citizenship.

The reason I put that addendum in is because the law was changed on conveyance of citizenship by birth... before 1972 citizenship was only conferred to children born of males overseas... after 1972 it applied also to females overseas who give birth. This mirrored changes in British law. It is also the #1 reason no one wanted to touch the issues over Obama’s ‘natural’ born citizenship.. he was born before 1972 and his father was a British subject.

I showed this to my BFF, Squeeky, and she just shook her head in dismay. Why is it, that your parents simply being in the country legally, when you are born here, is all that it takes to be “natural born”. Unless your parents are here as part of a diplomatic mission - why is that concept causes two-citizen parent Birthers to go all bonkers??? 14 years after Obama, and numerous court cases, and detailed analyis of Wong Kim Ark - and still the Birthers continue to birf???
