The idea of undercover Russian spies and deep cover ‘sleeper agents’ has been a source of much intrigue and speculation ever since the height of the Cold War, inspiring countless works of fiction and continuing to maintain a prominent place in our understanding of espionage.
But while TV programs such as long-running FX drama The Americans toyed with the idea of foreign spies hiding in plain sight in the heart of suburbia, in reality the exact same thing was playing out in real-time right under people’s noses.
Recently declassified FBI files have now revealed the existence of a vast network of undercover Russian spies active in the US during the 1990s and 2000s who were trained by the Kremlin to assimilate seamlessly into everyday American life by getting married, obtaining jobs and raising families, all while sending encoded messages back home.

I would bet that there are far more Chinese spies than Russian ones.
How did these Russian spies “fool the world”? What did they accomplish? What was their message? Who are they?
The tone of this article makes me laugh, as if the American government led by the Clinton/Obama/Biden axis of evil are the good guys. After seeing how utterly corrupt and treacherous the FBI, CIA, DHS (CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post) have become, who needs to fear foreign spies?

Why am I left wondering whether the FBI didn’t adopt this very same policy themselves years/decades ago to integrate into the bowels of the patriot movement?
They are called democRATs and many are so delusional that they don’t even realize they are communist threats to our country.

The same bunch would have never written this story during the Cold War, when they loved the Soviet empire, demanded nuclear freezes and détente, and castigated Reagan.
Wasn’t there a movie about Russians spies in the 50s passing as Americans.
Having jobs and raising families.
Not to forget Chinese spies who masquerade as college professors, grad students and tech employees. Chinese espionage imo is a far bigger threat.
I’ve always suspected that Nellie Ohr was a Russian spy considering her history of studying in Russia and obtaining a short wave radio and license.

I agree. I posted it partially to illustrate how crazy this anti-Russian atmosphere has gotten. The media is looking back decades at Russian misbehavior while ignoring the Chinese and other real threats.
The latest secret service scandal is a good example.
