Excellent Thai Food restaurant in Del Valle, TX!
Eating there ^ | 8 May 2022 | Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin

I don't ever laud a restaurant on this forum or the internet, but this time is an exception. I grew up in Thailand and this restaurant has awesome Thai food...REALLY good! It is in Del Valle just east of Austin and has very good food at a reasonable price...if you can get a seat.

Can't tell you how I found about it because that is proprietary business information, but highly recommend. You need to meet "Tenet" when you go there. Very good place to eat.

If you live in the Austin area and like Oriental food, you might try this place.

The referral sounded good until you got to the “I can’t tell you how I found this restaurant” bit. That is very, very strange.

I remember when you were trying to find a sushi restaurant there. So with that Thai background, what makes Thai food really good compared to run of the mill?

I'll give it a try the next time I get to Texas.

Not much food around Del Valle, California. The good news is you won't find any corona virus out here.

But you can find some great restaurants in nearby Livermore.

The flavor of the food. Very well cooked and seasoned. The Yellow Curry dish is outstanding and it is hard to get that just right.

Maybe put the name of the place in the narrative of your posting?

Yes, Little Thailand Restaurant. It is actually a good place to eat, it really is. I have tasted food all over the world so I know when something is palatable or not. Not knowing me, many don’t have a clue.

Here's the menu:

I have absolutely no financial interest in this place. I am not in ownership, invested, etc. at all. It is simply a good place to eat with great tasting food.

It’s funny how you will go to some small, out of the way place and find unique food. For instance there is a great authentic Mexican place in Bramwell WV, formerly the town with the highest per capita amount of millionaires.
Pembroke Va used to have an authentic Korean place. It’s now a really good BBQ place. Good BBQ places are rare in Appalachia.
There is a good Irish pub in downtown Lewisburg, WV(Coolest small town in America)

I love curry. Thai place by me has this off menu beef and garlic source dish which is killer. They toss some type of minty leaves on it which gives it a unique taste. Samo samo is the enemy for a foodie.

My spiciness register has dropped through the years, so I now get Americanized dishes.

To me the test of a good to great restaurant is how they cook Tom Kha Gai soup. Tried it all over and have realized that my preferences have drifted away from what is the Thai standard - but I like what I like, so there.

Most Thai restaurants are very careful about ingredients, at least in Texas. I find that the quality drops along the East Coast, and that the West Coast is hit or miss.

Recipes and the skill of the owner/head chef truly make the difference.

I've never stopped to eat in Livermore, but when I'm in that area, I like to go to Shan's, in Santa Clara, about 40 minutes to the west, for some great subcontinental cuisine.

So what does one look for in Tom Kha Gai soup to discern good or bad?

Thanks for the tip. I was in Santa Clara yesterday at an irrigation store. It's only eight miles from us. I haven't tried Shan yet, but will add it to my list.

Here's the link to Shan Restaurant.

There are lots of Thai Restaurants in Santa Clara.

There is a flavor that I like ... not much help, is it?

It seems that if they substitute out the galanga for a cheaper spice root, and use dried mushrooms, the flavor is just ... off.

The recipe for Tom Kah Gai from Bangkok City Thai, on Greenville Ave in Dallas, is the standard that I like. And even then one can tell that the flavors were not mixed well ...
