My wife & I are in search of a cruiser style bicycle where we sit upright and it has more than one speed. Any reviews, freepers?

Loving this tour so far.

Day one was rough. I crashed on a track bike at sprint speed. Cracked 3 ribs, my pelvis in 2 spots, tail bone and left skin and on the boards leaving permanent white patches on my body. Woke up to sirens.

Cycling is a dangerous sport and should be appreciated as such.

That said,

Cavendish stage win was a jaw dropping level of raw power and handling skills.

Love the way things are playing out.

True story:

Was walking home last week, about 9pm. Three houses away from home,. sits a bike leaning against a trash can. It's a nice Schwinn 21 speed. Not a new bike, not top of the line Schwinn, but looks good. I think.. naw.. and walk home. Get home, say to myself, "what the heck?"

I walk over to the neighbor, she's washing dishes so she sees me walking up. She looks , then recognizes me.
Comes to the door: "I'm sorry to bother you, but are you throwing that bike in the trash?"
She: "Yeah, you can have it if ya want it....I got two more in back we don't want anymore.."
Me: Oh gosh! No, I'll just take this one though. And thank you!"
"You bet.." she says, "Say, aren't you the guy who fixes things?"
Hehehe. OK, guilty. I have a '71 VW Super Beetle I am restoring, so maybe she's heard my grinding and cutting. Yeah, maybe..
Anyways, I take it home. The next day, I look it over. The derailleur is shot-like busted wheels broke.. I go to the bike shop, get a low dollar Shimano derailleur, clean up the chain, and bada bing! I got a nice bike for the oldest grandchild for like $20.

Now THAT'S a good deal there...

Try the Electra Townie. It sits upright and the pedal position makes it very comfortable to ride. We had a pair of them 16 years ago and they were great.

I was not aware that we had a bicycle thread.

So what’s the most effective way to avoid flat tires?

Looks like a different approach from those elliptical chainrings they were all hyped on in the mid-1980s, but with added mechanical complexity.

I’ll stick with my Shimano gruppe.

I've not had a flat in over ten years of road biking. Perhaps it's just luck. Aside from the obvious things like avoiding glass and potholes, I've read that keeping the tires at a high pressure helps prevent pinch flats. I keep mine at 120lbs.

They don’t know who she is, but the know she took a flight out of country.

That says it all.

The race directors are letting the spectacle be the lesson.

Plus she has to live with it and her family and friends knowing what she did.

Bet she still crys from time to time.

She’s “untraceable” now.

Letting it lie, protecting the tour.

My take anyhow.

70 is the new 40. I just sprung for my first full suspension bike. I’m way past wanting to crash down mountainsides and rip through rock gardens at speed, but I do enjoy off road trails and picking my way through tricky spots — slowly — is part of the fun. At this point, I am deliberately overbuying. I want a bike that is far more capable than I am so that I will never again have to ride past a dirt track, fire road or footpath running off through the woods, and think “I’m up for it but my bike can’t handle it.” If the weak link is me, that’s fine; I’m not young anymore. But I don’t want to be held back by the bike.

“...what’s the most effective way to avoid flat tires?”

Use Quality Tires and quality tubes and do not ride where rainfall has washed debris from the road to where your tires are riding through. This debrie field is where things like nails screwdrivers screws and other things attract collect after heavy rain and tires (all tires) will pick it up. I also used to use tire scrapers which I can’t seem to find any longer as brake mounting systems have changed.

The are unavoidable. Point is to carry a patch and co2 cartridge inflator kit. If you can’t repair a tube out, don’t leave the house.

If your running on sew ups. Have cell phone at all times, a credit card for a taxi and at least $20 for a passing pickup truck driver.
