Biden's plan to stop mining critical minerals 'irresponsible'
Washington Examiner ^ | 05/28/2021 | Abby Smith

Relying on foreign allies for critical minerals supply instead of mining domestically would be an “irresponsible” and “dangerous” policy for the Biden administration to pursue, a top lithium executive says.

Calaway was responding to a report that said the Biden administration, in a move to appease environmentalists, would focus on building a domestic industry to process critical minerals rather than exploring opportunities to mine in the U.S.

Those technologies are more mineral-intensive. The International Energy Agency recently projected the world’s appetite for critical minerals could grow by as much as six times in the next two decades. A typical electric car requires six times as many minerals as a gas-powered car, the IEA said.

The U.S., however, has little domestic supply of critical minerals. Much of the world’s production and processing is dominated by China.

Ioneer, an Australian company, is working to build a lithium mine to tap into the reserves in Nevada's Rhyolite Ridge, located about halfway between Las Vegas and Reno. The region has one-of-a-kind mineralogy that Ioneer hopes to take advantage of to produce lithium at some of the world's lowest costs.

At this point, it appears the Interior Department could be stalling. Calaway said Ioneer sent its project plans to the agency just as the new administration was taking office, but it’s been several months with no movement. He said he thinks the White House should push the Interior Department to issue the notice.

At this point, it appears the Interior Department could be stalling.

Ioneer’s project has not been without hurdles. The company has faced opposition from environmental activists who say the company’s project would destroy the habitat of a rare wildflower, known as Tiehm's buckwheat, that is only known to grow in Rhyolite Ridge.

In April, environmental activists scored a legal victory when a federal judge ordered the Fish and Wildlife Service to decide whether to protect the wildflower under the Endangered Species Act.

I’ve read that we’re all endangered species unless global warming is brought under control.

Perhaps that judge knows more than climate scientists.

The people who oppose our drilling for oil are the people who do the grunt work for Russia and the Jihad nations.

The people who oppose our mining and refining rare earths all while demanding we become more dependent on them are the people who do the grunt work for China.

These are also the same people who wanted us to believe Trump was a Russian stooge.

China appears to make veiled threat about rare earth minerals crucial to US technology industry
PUBLISHED TUE, MAY 28 2019

Speculation that China could use its dominance in rare earth minerals as a weapon in the trade war intensified after a Chinese official warned that products made from the materials should not be used against China’s development.

The comment, reported by CCTV, was taken as a veiled threat aimed at the U.S. and its technology companies that are dependent on the materials. Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited rare earth mining and processing facilities, adding to speculation that China could make the minerals more expensive or unavailable if the trade war continues to expand.

I was watching Jeff Bartos on Bannon's War Room the other day. (He's running for the US Senate seat here in PA to replace Arlen Toomey). He briefly talked about mining rare earth minerals in PA. I know PA has oil, gas, and coal. But I didn't realize it had rare earth minerals. So I did a little research. Yes sir, they be here. Back when Trump was running the show, the Penn State’s College of Earth and Mineral Sciences launched a Center for Critical Minerals. "[Penn State] and DOE researchers collaborated to successfully develop an economical way to extract rare earth elements from coal byproducts using an advanced ion exchange method."

In another DOE-funded project, they partnered with Texas Mineral Resources Corp., Inventure Renewables Inc. and K-Technologies to investigate if the process would be feasible on an industrial scale. The overall goal is to find an economical way to extract rare earth elements and critical minerals, such as manganese and cobalt, from coal byproducts.

“Pennsylvania has the resources. Pennsylvania coals and coal-associated products have the highest concentrations of these rare earth elements and critical minerals in the U.S. Penn State is well positioned to play a vital role in helping industrial partners here in the state,” Pisupati said.

Apparently "critical minerals" are here in the US, probably in greater abundance outside of PA and Xiden's approach is to allow China to be the world leader in yet another industry. How much did Hunter and the Big Guy get paid for this one?

For Biden to justify this due to environmental reasons is absurd. Who better than the United States to accomplish anything with minimal environmental impact. No other country has more will or ability to do so. So go ahead and farm out this endeavor to someone who has no concern about the environment. Perhaps we should insist on doing it ourselves in order to protect the environment. The logic of such a proposal is mind-boggling. Could there possibly be another agenda?

China has been engaged in some major manipulations to be the dominate controller of critical metals. Biden is doing China’s bidding under cover of environmental concerns.

I haven't seen anything indicating that. I assume the funds for this have already been appropriated and can't be pulled back. Also in the vast humongous US Government spending machine, this is just a drop in an ocean. There are too many other things that have higher priority to Xiden.

Just thinking a little bit more about this. Note how the Department of Interior is blocking the project noted in this article. Here in the Eastern US, that are far fewer federal lands. In PA, most mining operations are on privately owned property. I have long been for private ownership of land, and if not privately owned, then state owned. Last in line should be the federal government and only for military purposes. I would go as far as scraping the National Park system and giving the parks to the states. National forests should become state forests. BLM (not the burn, loot and murder organization) land should be turned over to states. Basically, the Department of Interior should be put out of business. It would be a huge defeat to eco-whackos. They would have to go after 50 different states instead of one federal bureaucracy where they have been able to plant their own people over the years.

Federal land ownership by state

Exactly my point. Here in PA, the vast majority of federal land, which is small compared to out west, is in the northern tier as part of the Allegheny National Forest. For the life of me, I could never tell any difference between National Forest from State Forest, except when it comes to developing resources on that land, e.g., most recently fracking shale for oil and gas. Which by the way, there are some 22 Trillion (that's with a T) cubic feet of natural gas in the Marcellus shale formation and additional reserves below that in the Utica shale formation.

This nation is so rich in resources and so rich in innovation. When there is unencumbered access to those resources there will be a way developed to extract those resources for the benefit of Americans.

The illegal Biden regime acts in a very childish way; if Trump did it, they undo it, to the immense harm of our country. The illegal Biden regime has not instituted a SINGLE measure which is beneficial to America. But they have inflicted us with dozens of extremely destructive ones which are intended to destroy America on behalf of their foreign masters.
