Fifty years ago 180,000 whales disappeared from the oceans without a trace, and researchers are still trying to make sense of why. Inside the most irrational environmental crime of the century.
The work began inauspiciously. In her first season, the Slava caught just 386 whales. But by the fifth - before which the fleet’s crew wrote a letter to Stalin pledging to bring home more than 500 tons of whale oil - the Slava’s annual catch was approaching 2,000. The next year it was 3,000. Then, in 1957, the ship’s crew discovered dense conglomerations of humpback whales to the north, off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. There were so many of them, packed so close together, the Slava’s helicopter pilots joked that they could make an emergency landing on the animals’ backs.

Well, roaming is somewhat limited as ranches are now fenced. But, actually Buffalo are now commercially raised for their meat. It can bought in grocery stores and it can be found in certain restaurants. Safe to say the American bison is no longer in danger of extinction.
“ There are still plenty of sandhill cranes. The “Ribeye of the Sky.”

Yeh, I know. I used to hunt them when I lived in Lubbock, Texas for awhile. But, many years ago they were endangered.
This is certainly a valuable lesson in the foibles of distant, unaccountable government bureaucracies run by people who have no idea what they are doing and no attachment to reality. One needs only look at the current crop of environmental “experts” to see history repeating: John Kerry, Greta Thunberg, Al Gore, Leonardo DeCaprio, etc., etc. while real environmental-related scientists go unheeded and scorned.
Ironically I am about three-quarters the way through reading Moby Dick. It is quite an education in whaling during the early nineteenth century.
Never trust people who don’t anthropomorphize. Never trust people who don’t get sarcasm.
Low IQ, Non English speakers, autistics and aspergerers, asians, etc. They’ll kill you and eat you if you show weakness.
“Sandhill crane,..”
Hundreds of those around here. We see them every year.

Good to know😊
I did my share of time in Lubbock as well. TTU.
I read that there are more Bison on ranches being raised for meat than there are in the wild. I think that’s pretty sad.
Thank you!
Speaking of Soviet environmental crimes:
Lake Karachay, the most polluted place on Earth.

“The Enviros used to have plan for a Buffalo Commons for the Midwest. It is probably still on the books for when depopulation occurs.”
The last great depopulation of North America was when Europeans brought diseases that the Native Americans had no defense against. In the 18th Century the buffalo once again roamed east of the Mississippi River. [”The Long Hunt, The Death of the Buffalo East of the Mississippi,” by Ted Franklin Belue, 1996]
The Left still want to herd us people into huge city-based enclaves so they can turn most of “flyover country” into a nature preserve that we proles won’t be allowed to visit.
Not enough to be caught, they must be stopped and punished and currently that isn't happening.
Who cares extinction is the nature of the world. Or so we have been taught.
Well, the species is now plentiful and thriving. So, I don’t see why that’s sad. I’m not so sure there would be very many if any if they were only allowed to exist in the wild.
I think it’s sad because they’re only raised for their meat. I wouldn’t mind seeing some wealthy donor buying land to keep other herds around.

Would you mind sharing where you live, just a general area, not specific? The reason I ask is here in Texas I drive by a couple of ranches that have Buffalo. And, frequently there are folks pulled off the road standing by the fence taking photos. I don’t know whether any of these Buffalos wind up on a dinner plate or not. But, they must be managed in order to maintain a healthy population. A side note; this is done to manage a healthy deer population as well. Some years it’s ok to take two doe’s and sometimes not. Some years eight point minimum required, and so on. Anyway, suggest you read up on the topic if interested.
I live in SE Pa. While there’s no room around here for them, upstate has quite a few acres of “game land” that could be used.
I don’t know if that area was part of the Buffalo’s natural habitat before the arrival and settlement of Europeans. But, you might consider contacting the government entity that has jurisdiction over the land you’re referring to and inquire about this. Ask if they’ve ever considered relocating a small herd to the area. If they say no, then ask why not? I’m curious as to what their response might be. Please post your findings for us. Good Luck, SB
Ok, thanks, will do-IF I get an answer!
