Up, Up and Away! World's largest all-electric aircraft takes to the skies for the first time making a 30-minute flight over Washington State

A single test pilot flew the all-electric aircraft over Moses Lake in Washington

MagniX have added their 750-watt electric motor to a Cessna Grand Caravan

It can seat up to nine people and required few changes to make it all electric

They hope to have a 100-mile range commercial version on sale in 2021

“I am sick to death of you fake environmental fanboys destroying the environment with huge solar farms and bird-killing wind turbines that require far more carbon energy than they produce.”

Excuse me! I spent my career designing and testing nuclear power plants!

“By the time you drive to the airport, go through screening and board the plane, you could have driven 150 miles traveling the speed limit. “

Exempt from TSA screening.

“How heavy is the battery? How much energy needs to be expended just to lift and transport that one part of the plane?”

Plane weights remain same. for ease of recertification.

“You never acknowledged that POH data is not inclusive of FAA restrictions on flights, nor should it be.”

The Caravan POH specifically includes 45 minutes fuel reserve in the range table.

Wow, you are up late. So that is a 45 minute reserve based on a fuel load in a standard caravan. Doesn’t really apply to a battery charge, or does it? Details like that would need to be described in detail in the supplement that will have to be issued for the electric engine version of the plane. I would believe what’s in that supplement when it’s issued as it’s based on flight test data. I wouldn’t believe anything from marketing, which is what you have in the article and company websites.

I don’t think so. A turbine aircraft engine is not that heavy. Batteries are. The aircrafts max weight doesn’t change as that is limited by structural design. So whatever weight goes into batteries comes out of available cargo or passenger weight. The caravans I fly can haul 17 passengers at 200lbs each and myself. The article stated something about this electric version being 8 passengers. That’s a big capacity hit.

750 Watts is only about 1 horsepower. Most 9 passenger airplanes require at least 500 horsepower to fly safely. No way would I want to fly in one of those. I wouldn’t even want to be close to an airport with one of those flying near it.

"Put some solar panels on the wings and the thing will fly forever."

I presume you're joking. The surface area of the entire airplane isn't even close to receiving enough power from the sun even if 100% of the energy it receives is converted directly to electric power. Solar cells convert only a small fraction of that, and that's not even considering clouds and night time.

Retired. Late movie with wife! At least know you better understand the POH for the plane you fly.

You seem to have forgotten about putting fuel into your weight calculation?

Earlier 208’s were max 9 passenger. Not all were configured for nine.

For comparison, the first internal combustion engine airplane 100 mile flight was in 1909.

You really think it has a 750 watt motor? LOL!
