At the stage of my life where I relive memories of childhood, school, old friends, marriage, raising my kids, moving around and career choices.
The following is a list of people I met and exchanged a smile or two.
Worked with John Rousakis, mayor of Savannah, GA. Tony Snow was in the DC physician's office where I worked. Carlton Sickles, the father of the DC Metro, also in the doctor's office - he gave me his 35 year pin. Worked with Patrick Hope, became a State Rep for Virginia. AG. William Sessions and I were jaywalking in DC and nearly got sideswiped by a car. Met Cal Ripkin on a plane. Sitting on a flight, next to a pilot who asked me what my favorite plane was - and I said "the F16". He whipped out an F16 pin and gave it to me. Reading an article in the Washington Times, I decided to call the paper and comment.... Emmett Tyrell answered the phone... he was charming and funny;)
My tiny brushes with celebrities....quite sure they remember me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God Bless.
Prince Charles visited a retirement home in our small hometown and we were friends with the next-door neighbors.
After he arrived his back was toward us as he shook hands with the retirement home employees in a receiving line on the porch.
At one point one of the 4x4 porch support posts was directly between him and me and I had a perfect view of the post with an ear sticking out of either side.
Its a memory Ill always cherish.
Sonny Rollins is THE nicest person I’ve EVER met.
I met Cal too at a book signing years ago. He was very nice.
Brings back memories. I remember Carlton Sickles. He was a congressman and also ran for governor of Maryland.
Attended School in England in 1953 when Queen Elizabeth drove through the small town as part of her meet & greet.
Maggie Thatcher’s Sec. of Education was in the same classes at that school. She became a Countess!
I met ragin cajun, James Carville, on an elevator in a DC hospital. I asked, “Are you who I think you are?”
He said, “yes” so, I asked what brought him to the hospital.
He said,”My wife is in labor”
I said, “Please give my best to your wife.”
I hope I projected scorn for him in my well wishes for her.
I didn’t know that!
When I was 15 I went to a concert where the band U2 was playing. It was 1980. The place was a little dive, and they werent even the headliners. My older sister had heard them and suggested we go. I think it was their first tour of America and they were literally traveling around to gigs in a chevy van.
after they finished playing, they were standing outside the venue and a group of us where chatting with them. It was the day John Lennon was shot. My friend took some photos, and have no idea what happened to those photos.
I once saw President Ronald Reagan on TV! /s
Some people simply have to brag about how important they are.
***Some people simply have to brag about how important they are****
Which people?
My experiences were happenstance - mostly because of work or travel!
I saw Peter Lawford on an escalator in Hawaii in 1969. I saw Sam Walton twice at Walmart. He spoke to me one of those times. My sister in law had a picture of her and Elvis at a talent show before he was famous. He had his arm around her and was dressed with fancy western gear. I saw the Beatles at a concert in St.Louis in the 60s. My distant cousin was Ellen Drew. I met Governors Sean Parnell and Bill Walker in Alaska at the Governors house. Guess thats it.
The key word in the original post is the word friendly. With all the strife in the world today, its good to see something pleasant here once in awhile.
Awhile back a Freeper posted that he and his son ran into Dwane The Rock Johnson while fishing a trout stream somewhere. The son was a fan of Johnson. Johnson was very cordial. And if I recall correctly, they all went to lunch together afterwards.
Stories like that one balance out the ones about Alex Baldwin or Barbra Streisand screaming at people.
That reminds me. I got to hang out with Henry Rollins (yes, another Rollins) before a Black Flag show in Savannah. Interesting dude. This was back when he had really long hair.
Met Joe Walsh at a hotel bar in Rochester, NY 1992 right after the Presidential election. I shook his hand and told him I voted for him for VP (Joe always ran for VP).
He was half bombed (so was I) and he said, “I’ll try not to let you down, man”.
Growing up in Hicksville, Long Island, I lived around the corner from Billy Joel. His sister Judy and my sister were friends. He performed at a school event when he was in 4th grade. Sang and danced. Was awesome even back then. I remember my Dad saying that kid is gonna go places.
I also met Jon Bought after the 2012 convention in Tampa at the airport. My friend and I took pictures with him. He was very accommodating.
That would be Jon Voight darn auto correct.
I worked as a stagehand in a couple of different venues when I was much younger. Met a lot of rock and roll personalities. I can’t say I was overly impressed with any of them as people. As artists, yeah. A few of them anyway.
I got yelled at by Oscar Robertson because I kept asking him for his autograph at the Forum in Los Angeles, circa 1974. Around the same time, Jack Nicholson finally turned around to us and gave us a weird look because my buddy kept yelling to him.....”jack?...who’s Warren? Jack, how’s Warren? Jack How’s warren?”.....my buddy was aware that Jack and Warren were doing all the girls in Hollywood at that time.
I worked for Ernest Rady a billionaire and he always nice to me. Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, he once owned the Padres, Rady School of Management UC San Diego.
I shook hand with the late Salvador Sanchez, the featherweight champ and incredible boxer as he entered the ring at the Los Angeles Olympic Auditorium. I had run down to the ring just as he was climbing in.
I have a picture of me and Roberto Duran when I went to see him train at the Main St. Gym in Los Angeles, early 80s.
I shook hands with sweet lou Johnson of the Los Angeles Dodgers......late 60s when I ran down to the fence along the left field line.
