I still remember my first ice hockey fight. All the movies I

Of course I’ve been in the art 61 years now ... can do maybe 1/3 of what I used to do .. so one evolves their art. Bennett doing the points for about 25 years now. I have run into / played with many MANY wrestlers boxers street fighters etc in my years. There are exception players in each disipline ... which art is better ? Given a life time practitioner in any valid art renders a very tough opponent. Most true practitioners will recognize an other and will not try to best them at their particular art. They rather try to compare and learn for each other to better their art
It's not that martial arts is fake. It's that it doesn't prepare the student very well for a real fight with someone who is trying his best to hurt him, with no rules and no mat.
Today, there are so many “belt” awards...When I studied Ishin Ryu, there was white, green, brown, then black...
Now there are so many “in between” belts I hear...
I guess it’s to cover people who want instant gratification or they get bored easily...
Again, that depends on the preparation undertaken...
One of the truths of fighting is that if you fight a wrestler, you will end up on the ground. (At which point, unless you can match them, it’s over.)
Been there already. I’m a little guy, that ain’t happening, I’m taking him out if I can. I will do what I have to do while in fear for my life. I will take my chances that the judge will take that 100lb difference into account and that I was indeed in fear for my life and had every right to defend myself with deadly resistance.
There are Cultural Martial Arts, Combat Sports, and pure Combat(no rules)..
I too have been practicing for most of my life. I have put together the best of all the disciplines I have learned and created the most effective combinations for me to disable as quick as possible. And now that I am getting older and slower I have been learning Arnis cane fighting and Kali. It has come time in my life for a weapon to compensate.
My son was 13 years old and had recently received his black belt after 5 1/2 years of training.
He was walking down the hall of his school when a “student” who was a good 6’2” and 220 pounds (my son was 5’6”) and tried to do the knockout game on him from behind.
Fortunately someone saw it coming and said “look out!”
In a fraction of a second my son turned and blocked the punch in such a way that he dislocated the larger boy’s elbow.
After that I felt much better about the four times a week classes, the $250 a month, and the aroma of the dojo...
That being said, I was a wrestler in high school and had a fight with a kid who “knew karate”.
When he kicked at me I went in low, hooked his leg, got him moving vertically, got my other arm around his neck, and put him on the ground so hard he crunched.
Whole thing took less than 5 seconds.
A good wrestler will tie up and subdue a good puncher.
But also from the furthest 'fighting' side of the martial arts to the furthest mental/physical/balance/harmony side, which borders on yoga, is a long distance, and the term 'martial arts', if expected to describe one single thing, is like picking a state in the US as an example of the US weather.
The styles/forms themselves have different purposes, and within the styles they are studied/practiced by different people for different reasons. The very same forms can be used to develop strength or technique or simply mental clarity / meditation.
I practiced for 6 years and frankly never cared one bit whether it would work in a street fight. The practice/forms were to reset and align the body, open joints, condition the muscle in a certain way. (interestingly -> more akin to the pliability of what is now the type of focus of things like TB12 - which is legit stuff.)
So ... it really all depends on why you're doing it, and then navigating all the BS and hype and fake wizardry to find a style and teacher that matches your aims.
The Martial Arts were brought to China as a way to get the Buddhist monks off their asses because sitting around all day meditating is not going to create a mind that is going to achieve any clarity.
Now I recognize that all that is a bit of an impressionist painting of the subject, so if the purists want to have at me, feel free :-)
Who are you training with ? ... Ken Smith ? ... I trained Modern Arnis with Ken Smith and Bruce Chiu ... Remy Presas was a great practitioner.
With my background in other disciplines under my belt your are not going to believe this, With a lot of work, mental self organization, and effort I am picking it up pretty well from youtubes. lol
Tell you what though, I need another body to work out with. Especially the cane techniques, air just doesn’t do it. the Kali not so much, a couple tires to work on do pretty well for practicing smooth flow and strikes.
The best tool martial arts has given me is the ability to quickly recognize some of the options I have to counter a grab or choke.
It also has given me the ability to quickly see the open spots the opponent has and what would be a good strike at those areas.
It gives me the confidence that I can continue after a hard hit. No matter how hard you try to pull strikes in sparring sometimes it lands a lot harder than planned.
I totally agree with the importance of balance. I never thought I would have the balance I have at this point in my life. Balance and knowing how to fall properly has no doubt prevented me from injury.
When me and the kids (who are now taller than me) are grappling one will grab me and say “how are you going to get out of that dad?” How bad do you want it to hurt?
Where do you live ... I know a “few” martial artists ... perhaps even one in your area that you could train with
[Thats why my brother became a victim of the knock-out game. He lost situational awareness. He thought that because he was a liberal anti-Republican, those youts wouldnt hurt him. They did.]
Hail Vitus!
