I still remember my first ice hockey fight. All the movies I

I guarantee you that some students of traditional martial arts can indeed fight and win fights with the skills taught them.
I can tell you that my study of Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do greatly increased my coordination and athleticism.
But are they are prepared to face MMA fighters?
Nope. Not even a little bit.
When I studied Isshin Ryu under Master Harold Long (look him up) in the early ‘60’s, every Saturday was dedicated to nothing but “street techniques”...
I never had a problem...
Its not about fighting
its about having the skills that you dont have to use them
Your reputation will proceed you
I was thinking of starting to learn Krav Maga.
“...going to a couple of karate classes...”
It took me 6 years of study to obtain 1st Dan Black Belt in Isshin Ryu...
Were traditional martial arts ever meant for down and dirty street fighting? We all know the karate scenes in movies are highly choreographed, and that an opponent in real life will not be sticking to the script.
As a USAF Security Policeman on town patrol duty in ROK in 1969 I can’t tell you how many drunk Airmen I encountered trying to fight each other using Tai Kwan Do that got their butts kicked.
It would have helped if you had edited what you posted so that we didn’t have to read thru identical paragraphs.........
I think that is basically street fighting discipline...Great style to study, IMO...
There is a style worth studying IMO!
Fully half of all people who get into fights end up losing.
During my misspent youth I spent a few years studying Chinese boxing. The defenses I learned against grabs (arm grabs, shirt grabs, etc.) were quite useful and valuable. Everything else, not so much.
No, they were not, but I have seen several fights settled with traditional martial arts techniques.
It really depends on how any given person applies a technique to any given opponent.
If you are a street punk, and you pick a fight with someone who has studied karate for years, you are very likely going to lose.
I find it very misleading that people point to these Youtube videos of an MMA fighter beating a “Kung Fu” Master. The fact is, whenever you have a professional fighter against someone who is not a professional fighter that pro will generally win. This is the same game the Gracies used to grow UFC, they were all professional fighters against people who were not. It’s never the style that determines the fight but the person. Also, if they allowed eye gouging, biting etc. these fights might be different.
After college I took a series of nightly lessons from one of the ten original Japanese Akido teachers.
After the lesson each night, the black belts and myself would go at it.
I crushed them. They simply didn't have a whisper of hope. None of them.
It just goes to show that we were as highy trained as the most advanced martial arts. If you waited, you could get behind them and hogtie them. I could have broken their necks any time I wanted.
But in a place where people who have reputations congregate, that doesn’t matter.
Fighting, like everything else in the human experience, never goes that well the first time someone does it. I’m sure that the famous lover Don Juan’s first sexual experience with a woman was probably only 30 seconds long and mostly enjoyed only by himself. I don’t care who you are when you’re in your first fight and you get your face punched hard, it is a revaluation.
Maybe, maybe not.........
I had an uncle who was a fly weight boxing champion back in the early 1930's. The one thing I learned from him was to make sure you get in the first punch by smashing in his nose then treat the fight as if your opponent is trying to kill you..,..That means gouging out his eyes or grabbing his wind pipe and crushing it or smashing his balls...
When you have made the decision that you are fighting for your life, there are no rules........
As for your martial arts, you don't see any of that crap anymore, it's all MMA. And MMA is all about grappling and subduing your opponent while beating on him.........
