It's only $4.99. But Costco's rotisserie chicken comes at a huge price
CNN ^ | Oct 112019 | Nathaniel Meyersohn

At the back of Costco's stores, past the televisions, jewelry, jumbo-sized ketchup jugs and tubs of mixed nuts, is one of the retailer's most prized items: The rotisserie chicken that costs just $4.99.

Cheap Kirkland Signature rotisserie chickens aren't only a quick way for families to get dinner on the table. For Costco, the chickens are a lure, pulling customers into stores and getting them to browse the aisles, adding sometimes hundreds of dollars worth of items to their shopping carts before they pick up that bird. The chickens have become almost a cult item. 91 million were sold last year, double the number from a decade earlier. They have their own Facebook page with nearly 13,000 followers. So Costco is willing to go to extreme lengths to keep its chickens at $4.99. For the past few years, it's been recruiting farmers for this moment: The official opening of a sprawling, $450 million poultry complex of its very own in Nebraska.

Next they’ll complain about the $1.50 hot dogs.

“Next they’ll complain about the $1.50 hot dogs.”

No polish dogs and they switched from coke to Pepsi.

While walking through a store - BAM - that aroma hits the nostrils. Don’t really care how much it costs. Dinner is served.

I can get the same type of Chicken at Walmart for not much more price. And I save on Costco’s yearly fee. Tried Costco for a year but you have to buy bigger quantities and that is impractical for us. However their edible merchandise is of good quality.

I stop patronizing places that switched from Coke to Pepsi products, in most cases.

They used to serve Hebrew National Hotdogs, now they serve Kirkland 1/4 pound “plus” Hot Dogs.

Hot Dog and a Pepsi for $1.50, still can’t beat it.

The discount that I get on gasoline at Costco virtually pays for the yearly membership fee. It’s consistently $.20-$.30 a gallon less than competitors

Walmart chickens are smaller and cost more than Costco chickens.

That’s not a statement. If the only way to keep patronizing the place is to attempt to drink a Pissy, do you have a choice?

The article didn’t exactly backup the alarmist headline. People don’t buy these things because they expect Elsie the chicken to have a relaxed, comfortable like before the choppping block or because they assume only the finest, natiral whole nutrients go into the bird. They buy them because they are cheap, tasty and easy to prepare and serve, and certainly no worse for you than a couple of Banquet TV dinners.

I have had several Mystery Chickens over my military enlistment. Free and all you have to do is enlist or earn a commission to get some weekly or in some cases daily, LMBO!
