Earlier this year, Amazon invested $700 million in Michigans electric car startup Rivian, but now the company has built on that with an order for 100,000 vans to hit the roads by 2024, which is a lot of vans.
These vehicles leverage much of the technology developed for the R1T and R1S, including battery, powertrain, thermal, controls, electrical network and connectivity platform. This commonality will drive meaningful scale benefits across all Rivian-manufactured vehicles. The vehicle body and interior design, application software and suspension have been developed specifically for Amazons last-mile delivery operations, ensuring these vehicles fit seamlessly into the Amazon logistics network.

PEEP_PEEP, Little Bill!
For all the people who will eventually be living in a van down by the river.
This is going to be funny as hell when they bring them to California and find out there isn’t any Electricity to charge them with.
Made in the former Mitsubishi factory, Normal Il.
The spokesperson also confirmed that this specific van design will be exclusive to the Amazon partnership, and will be produced on a separate assembly line from the R1T and R1S passenger vehicles in the automakers Illinois assembly plant. Rivian also claims the van order will not cause any delay in delivery for reservation holders of the R1T and R1S.
And for the California types, maybe taxpayer-paid charging down by the river?

Almost anything is possible in the land of fruits and nuts.
The rest of the USA outside of New York, no problemo.
This is Monopolistic Behavior for what Amazon is and does.
Thanks DUMBGRUNT.

Oh the horror when they find out the ecological damage caused by those batteries and their manufacture.
There won’t be a problem here.
Too many of you just have a hard on for NY which I find quite amusing :)

When did FreeRepublic become home to so many ecology mavens?
This is Monopolistic Behavior for what Amazon is and does.
Have you written your sainted senator Pocahantas about this?
She will be the one to help with this problem.
They’re gonna have to burn a lot of coal and oil to charge those batteries.
Although I love Amazon, I’d be overjoyed if that little prick Bezos somehow wound up in penury.
In case you missed it:

Years ago a guy I knew was a successful stock trader, his thing was to follow the big money, they know something.
He said you will never get the deal they get but you can do well on the crumbs and morsels.

City traffic is what they do best in.
Every time you tap the brakes the drive motors switch to generators and charge the batteries.
Crapy stop and go gives great MPGe.
Bezos somehow wound up in penury.
Hate the sin, love the sinner?
Or in this case, love the sin, hate the sinner?
Key phrase here: “last mile”. Amazon will get places to keep these vans, which will allow them to charge overnight. Then in the morning they will be loaded up with packages from the big truck, and deliver them to the nearby neighborhoods.
They don’t need a lot of range for that. They will be doing a lot of “stop, deliver package, move a few doors down, deliver next package”.
For the most part their pickup looks pretty good. The front grill/headlights are a deal breaker for me.
Butt ugly.
Prexactly!
