Ketosis and Kidney Function: Here’s What the Science Says
perfectketo.com ^ | April 16, 2019 | Unknown

Whenever a non-traditional diet becomes mainstream, there’s skepticism about its real impact on health — and the ketogenic diet is no exception.

After all, it isn’t every day that you hear about a diet that encourages you to eat tasty, fatty cuts of meat.

Since dietary fats have been unfairly demonized for the past few decades, some people are worried that keto may affect your internal organs.

Specifically, there’s controversy about the keto-kidney connection.

So is the low carb, high fat lifestyle bad for your kidneys?

Read on to see the two sides of the debate.

I am posting this as a Mea Culpa for a previous post I made in the following thread:

My Previous Comment Here

mlo and 762X51 recommended further research, which I have done. Not only was my previous post incorrect, it was exactly the opposite of what current research shows.

I recommend the article for anyone on, or thinking about going on the Keto.

Please note the following WRT a high protein/low carb diet (aka atkins): "If you have any kidney problems, eating too much protein puts added strain on your kidneys. This could worsen kidney function."

High Protein Low Carb

Especially when said non-traditional diet stands to cut into the profits of Big Food and Big Pharma.

I don’t expect unbiased truth from a site called perfectketo.com. Keto is just another fad diet.

Duh. If you are having trouble eliminating Creatinine a Creatinine load is probably not a good idea. Making recommendations for an entire population based on what is good/bad for a distinct minority with a disease. Probably doesn’t make a lot of sense either.

There was plenty of evidence Atkins was correct while he was alive but he so much pisssed of the AMA types they fought very hard to keep him for getting any recognition and denied he was right even up until about a week after his death. THEN they started to change their mind. But they couldn’t bring themselves to do it while he was alive.

I don’t expect unbiased truth from a site called perfectketo.com, either.

That doesn’t make “keto” a fad diet.

If one wants to control their weight they’ll have to control their lifestyle from now on. The old fashioned Mediterranean diet has been working for years. Folks might want to consider that option if they’re serious.

This stuff is all beyond me. 60 years ago when I was young, virtually no one was overweight. There was nothing special in our diets, far from it.

“Keto is just another fad diet.”

Not from the information I have found. Keto diets are dangerous in that the body doesn’t react the same to stimulus all the time. And the stimulus is different all the time. It’s like choosing to step into the batters box and try to determine if the pitch is on one side over the plate or behind you to hit it. And diabetes increases that variance. So you can’t successfully determine the amount of nutrients to ingest.

The aim of the keto diet is to put, and keep, your body in a metabolic state called ketosis. Our bodies normally burn carbohydrates for energy. When you restrict the amount of carbs, the body will break down stored fat, creating molecules called ketones to use as fuel.

Some studies , in fact, suggest that a ketogenic diet is safe for significantly overweight or obese people. But those are healthy people that are not burdened with health issues like diabetes or thyroid problems to name a couple. For people like those, a keto diet can lead to ketoacidosis which occurs when the body produces dangerously high levels of ketones. Ketoacidosis can be life threatening as it is even capable of causing swelling of the brain thus death. And the entire intent of the keto diet is to place the body in the beginning stages of this dangerous effect.

In the first week or so of the diet expect the possibility of these symptoms: headache, fatigue, brain fog, irritability, constipation, trouble sleeping, nausea, stomachache, dizziness, sugar cravings, cramps, sore muscles, and bad breath. This is identified either all or part of them as “keto flu” by many.

The following is a good article from the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial. The author, Rachel Kleinman is an RDN, LDN, clinical dietitian at Ingalls.

If there is a “Big Carb” then there must also be a “Big Meat.”

Someone with serious thyroid problems or diabetes probably OUGHT to be cautious about diet changes. But keto - and I don’t follow a keto diet BTW - is NOT dangerous for normal overweight people. Certainly not nearly as dangerous as continuing to follow the “low fat” advice from the AHA & USDA that has done some much to make America swell up like a balloon.

““There are heart-healthy sources of fat, however if that person is not educated on heart-healthy sources of fat, they may consume excessive amounts of saturated fats that can increase your risk of heart disease,” Condon said.”

Someone hasn’t kept up with research, eh! HUGE difference between eating half of a double-stuff pizza and eating a couple of slices of cheese for dinner. It isn’t the “saturated fat” but what so many people eat ALONG WITH the saturated fat - the bread, the sugar, and the high-carb lifestyle that encourages cravings for more and more food!

From your article again:

“The keto diet could cause low blood pressure, kidney stones, constipation, nutrient deficiencies and an increased risk of heart disease. Strict diets like keto could also cause social isolation or disordered eating.”

Yeah, and the damn bogyman is under your bed and will attack you at night! Good grief! “social isolation or disordered eating”??????? Low blood pressure? Most people who switch to a keto diet are TRYING to lower their blood pressure! Mine, on my “not exactly keto diet” has come down 20 points. THAT IS A GOOD THING!

What world does she live in?

If someone takes insulin, they probably ought to be cautious about trying a diet that is supposed to affect insulin levels. No kidding. But to call a keto diet dangerous? It’s THE SUGAR DIET that is killing us!

Yeah...I noticed that also...lol.

Been on Keto (again) for about a month. Lost maybe 6 lbs. Yes; it made me pee more, especially in the beginning, but that leveled out. The high carb lower fat and protein diets make me gain weight.

I do believe a happy medium can be reached but the high fat is key to keeping me satiated and not hungry all the time. High carb (read: high sugar) left me hungry after an hour or so. The high carb diet also kept me on a roller coaster of energy. Crash and burn, fast, sleepy, rinse, repeat. The Keto style eating keeps my energy level fairly constant without the crash and burns. Obviously processed foods are the real killer.

I also believe the naysayer studies are likely funded by those who sell and grow the high carb/sugar/processed foods.

".... Keto is just another fad diet...."

Reminds me of the joke about masturbation. "How many times masturbating is too much? One more time than I do it."

The keto diet is only a fad because you don't do it.

I've been on a low processed carb, high protein and fat way of eating for over 20 years now. I initially lost 100 lbs and have been able to keep it off by staying away from processed carbohydrates and sugar. It is nothing more than the Atkins diet with another name.

I had my annual checkup with my doctor at the VA last week. Fasting labs. Complete workup. My doctor says everything is within normal ranges, including my kidney function.

I started on this way of eating because I was pre-diabetes. My doc told me if I didn't change the way I was eating, I would get diabetes without a doubt.

Well, that all went away when I started eating this way. It eliminates the severe ups and downs in your blood sugars caused by eating process carbs. Those spikes in your blood sugar are one of the causes of diabetes because it eventually damages your vessels.

I don't believe what the government or experts say about this. For years I ate according to the official food pyramid published by the government. Turns out that was what was causing my problems.

I know it works and turned my health around and remains an easy way to stay healthy. I burn fat now instead of sugar (glucose) for energy and my "stores" of fat have made me skinny again.

Fads are only what other people engage in.

"I don’t expect unbiased truth from a site called perfectketo.com."

That's good, you shouldn't. However the article cites several specific scientific papers, and you can read those regardless of how you got to them. Are those papers meaningful?

I know, reading a bunch of papers, digging through the actual science, would be a lot of work. But some of us have done the work and there are several really good books out there that go through the science.

"Keto is just another fad diet."

The fad diet was when people were told to avoid dietary fat and cholesterol and stock up on carbohydrates. There was no scientific basis for that. But we did it, and got sick. A ketogenic diet is just reverting to a natural diet for the human organism.

"The old fashioned Mediterranean diet has been working for years."

Depending on what you mean by Mediterranean diet, it can be a great improvement over the standard diet and many people can do well on it. Like with most diets, the benefits come from what you are avoiding more than what you are eating. It's getting less bad, but not ideal.
