I don’t expect unbiased truth from a site called perfectketo.com. Keto is just another fad diet.

I don’t expect unbiased truth from a site called perfectketo.com, either.

That doesn’t make “keto” a fad diet.

“Keto is just another fad diet.”

Not from the information I have found. Keto diets are dangerous in that the body doesn’t react the same to stimulus all the time. And the stimulus is different all the time. It’s like choosing to step into the batters box and try to determine if the pitch is on one side over the plate or behind you to hit it. And diabetes increases that variance. So you can’t successfully determine the amount of nutrients to ingest.

The aim of the keto diet is to put, and keep, your body in a metabolic state called ketosis. Our bodies normally burn carbohydrates for energy. When you restrict the amount of carbs, the body will break down stored fat, creating molecules called ketones to use as fuel.

Some studies , in fact, suggest that a ketogenic diet is safe for significantly overweight or obese people. But those are healthy people that are not burdened with health issues like diabetes or thyroid problems to name a couple. For people like those, a keto diet can lead to ketoacidosis which occurs when the body produces dangerously high levels of ketones. Ketoacidosis can be life threatening as it is even capable of causing swelling of the brain thus death. And the entire intent of the keto diet is to place the body in the beginning stages of this dangerous effect.

In the first week or so of the diet expect the possibility of these symptoms: headache, fatigue, brain fog, irritability, constipation, trouble sleeping, nausea, stomachache, dizziness, sugar cravings, cramps, sore muscles, and bad breath. This is identified either all or part of them as “keto flu” by many.

The following is a good article from the UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial. The author, Rachel Kleinman is an RDN, LDN, clinical dietitian at Ingalls.

".... Keto is just another fad diet...."

Reminds me of the joke about masturbation. "How many times masturbating is too much? One more time than I do it."

The keto diet is only a fad because you don't do it.

I've been on a low processed carb, high protein and fat way of eating for over 20 years now. I initially lost 100 lbs and have been able to keep it off by staying away from processed carbohydrates and sugar. It is nothing more than the Atkins diet with another name.

I had my annual checkup with my doctor at the VA last week. Fasting labs. Complete workup. My doctor says everything is within normal ranges, including my kidney function.

I started on this way of eating because I was pre-diabetes. My doc told me if I didn't change the way I was eating, I would get diabetes without a doubt.

Well, that all went away when I started eating this way. It eliminates the severe ups and downs in your blood sugars caused by eating process carbs. Those spikes in your blood sugar are one of the causes of diabetes because it eventually damages your vessels.

I don't believe what the government or experts say about this. For years I ate according to the official food pyramid published by the government. Turns out that was what was causing my problems.

I know it works and turned my health around and remains an easy way to stay healthy. I burn fat now instead of sugar (glucose) for energy and my "stores" of fat have made me skinny again.

Fads are only what other people engage in.

That's good, you shouldn't. However the article cites several specific scientific papers, and you can read those regardless of how you got to them. Are those papers meaningful?

I know, reading a bunch of papers, digging through the actual science, would be a lot of work. But some of us have done the work and there are several really good books out there that go through the science.

"Keto is just another fad diet."

The fad diet was when people were told to avoid dietary fat and cholesterol and stock up on carbohydrates. There was no scientific basis for that. But we did it, and got sick. A ketogenic diet is just reverting to a natural diet for the human organism.

Fad my arsh. Fast is how the body works.

Quit eating for a week. Only water or tea. No sugar.

You will burn off 10 lbs every 4 days.

Works great.
