I have a very egotistical doctor friend to whom I mentioned an anti-inflammatory diet, including elimination of toxic oils. She snidely said, “And WHAT is a toxic oil?” Totally dismissive and ignorant. I could deal with somebody willing to learn something new, but no, the arrogance is astounding.

"Ketoacidosis is a potential complication of type 1 diabetes..."

Yes, and is not applicable to whether a ketogenic diet is generally safe. A ketogenic diet isn't causing the ketoacidosis, and most people aren't Type I diabetics.

"...it can lead to nutritional imbalances in some people or result in them not getting enough calories thus malnutrition that increases the step toward ketoacidosis."

Yeah, I saw that article too. Ludicrous. A ketogenic diet is not normally calorie limited, and there are no essential nutrients in the foods being eliminated.

"Ketosis and ketoacidosis both cause ketone levels in the body to rise. Nutritional ketosis is the aim of the ketogenic diet, and it is generally safe, whereas ketoacidosis is a potentially dangerous. The body is not the same for everyone or everyday for the one. It depends on how many times you want to flip the coin."

Nope. Conflating ketosis and ketoacidosis again. They both have "keto" in their names. They are not the same thing and one does not cause the other.

"Salt tablets are an unacceptable choice for electrolyte replenishment for two reasons:"

I didn't say salt tablets. I said salt, and that you may need more electrolytes. Nothing says you have to limit that to salt. There is evidence that the "keto flu", which is temporary, is triggered by insufficient electrolytes and can be easily fixed by increasing those.

"The field is changing all the time. And changes are the success of research."

Not really. I'm not talking about some additional knowledge or a new understanding here and there. I'm talking about an entire paradigm shift. Dietitians have been trained that an ideal diet is one reflected in the food pyramid. Low fat, lots of carbs, avoid salt and saturated fat, etc. This informs every other aspect. And it's all wrong.

I think they teach that in medical school too. :-)

Seriously though, I've seen that reaction. But I've also had some reasonable discussions with a couple of my doctors. And with them, it was apparent that they had less knowledge about the subject than I did. They just didn't have the arrogance to make them pretend otherwise.

Doctors aren't taught about nutrition in medical school, and it wouldn't really help if they were because most of the things they would be taught are wrong. They follow guidelines handed down by medical authorities, just like the rest of us.

I’ve been interested in making the move to a carnivore diet. I am already nearly there anyway. There’s a standing rib roast in my fridge. Maybe today is the day to get started.

This stuff is all beyond me. 60 years ago when I was young, virtually no one was overweight.

Major difference 60 years ago (and even 40 years ago as this 1970s photo points out) is that children were active all day, every day.

My childhood was like this picture and I was rail thin. We rode around the neighborhoods hours a day, stopping for pickup ball games, for some swimming, some exploring and other "mischief".

These days, kids are literally cocooned indoors and when they do venture out of door, it is only for heavily structured activities, chaperoned by hovering adults with juice and snacks at the ready.

Now well in my 50s, I still take long walks through my neighborhoods on a regular basis. The kids are literally non-existent. You might see a dad mowing his lawn or tending to a Weber grill on his deck, but none of the kids are out there playing. They are all indoors or shuttled around in mini-vans by their moms.

Sometimes I walk early enough for the school buses so I know there are plenty of kids. Would you believe that most of these parents literally idle their cars at the end of the driveways, so that their children can literally step out of their cars and go right onto the school bus? Then the parents will back down the driveway and into their garages.

There were school buses when I was growing up too but we walked to the bus stops ourselves. Any kid past the third grade getting on a bus after sitting in his Mom's car would have been mocked unmercifully.

Anyway, I do remember a few fat kids from my school back then. They were called "fatsos" (one of the kinder words used). I remember in particular one very heavy kid, I'll call him Johnny. He was Italian and his mom cooked him pasta dishes all the time. I remember being over the house a few times and it was always "Johnny, eat something, eat something" and she'd always have cookies, pastries and other sweets on the table. Dinner was usually spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, ravioli, with entire loaves of sliced Italian bread.

Forty years later, it makes more sense why this particular kid was so fat.

Aside from adding some fun fatty foods to a normal diet; Keto seems fairly benign nutritionally. All it takes away is starchy carbs and sugars (and of course processed foods) which are really only beneficial to those who do intensive labor during the day so they have quick sugar/carb energy to burn.

Is it any wonder so many kids from that era grew up liking the chopper type motorcycles? It was practically hardwired into them at a young age with the banana seats and ape hanger handlebars on their bicycles.

“Ketoacidosis is completely different from ketosis.”

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead; this results in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body.

Ketoacidosis is a serious complication that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones.

A keto diet refers to a ketogenic diet, which is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet. The goal is to get more calories from protein and fat than from carbs. It works by depleting your body of its store of sugar, so it will start to break down protein and fat for energy, causing ketosis (and weight loss).

The connection of the two is the increase in the amount of keytones in the body. When a fad diet hits the market, it seems to take a life of its own in popularity. A few get by without health issues so other think they are safe. You can get this diet information off the web, in books, even on TV. But the one thing you can’t get, is the knowledge that you are, by using it, having a diet designed to raise keytone amounts and push toward a medical problem, sometimes even with a healthy person. And because it is so well sold, and so many people are finding success with it, everyone thinks it is the answer to health problems for everyone.

There is no such thing as a blanket diet that is successful for all. This is why after all these years of people being led to believe that trim and fit is the answer to nirvana, depending on which expert is making money off it, diets still continue to surface.

So as long as people buy into it, and I will admit starvation can account for weight loss also, it depends on how much of a gamble people are willing to take because it can also cause death. And the web doesn’t sell it that way. Enjoy your diets. I hope you stay out of the ER. Most will, some won’t. Which ones? The sellers don’t know or care who you are, but they know some will and are willing to take their money the same as the lucky ones. You shouldn’t intentionally try to get this effect to lose weight there are safer ways to accomplish, but it’s your body, your call. Hope it’s none of you get hurt.

“But the one thing you can’t get, is the knowledge that you are, by using it, having a diet designed to raise keytone amounts and push toward a medical problem...”

Actually...having read books about it and watched videos about it...the Keto diet BOASTS that it wants to cause more ketones in the body. You can buy equipment to help make sure you are “achieving” it.

And that is NOT unhealthy! You are not creating a medical problem any more than drinking a glass of water means you are pushing to drown yourself!

“A few get by without health issues so other think they are safe.”

How about “millions”. And they do so because it works for them, unlike the low fat diet that the US government and the American Heart Association push. The “fad diet” says fat is bad. Because there is no data that shows increasing fat BY ITSELF is bad. Increasing it while also increasing flour and sugar, with the flour and sugar causing cravings to eat more and more? Yep - bad.

But reaching for a slice of cheese instead of “low fat yogurt” with a ton of sugar in it? Excellent!

Producing ketones is NORMAL. As YOU said, “When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead...”

So...if you want to burn up stored fat - fat that is behind the abdominal wall, squeezing your heart, how do you do it without producing ketones? You can’t.

If someone is slim and wants to keep eating the way they are, fine. Those of us who have built up a lot of fat need a way to get our bodies to BURN FAT. But that has NOTHING to do with ketoacidosis - just as a glass of water has nothing to do with drowning, and adding fat to your diet has nothing to do with eating a thick crust, double-stuff pizza!
