A transgender woman from El Salvador, she moved to Washington, D.C., in the late 1980s to escape the country's civil war. It was a time when AIDS was already devastating an entire generation of gay men and transgender women in the United States. Homophobia and transphobia were part of everyday life, from finding housing or landing a job to facing all-too-real threats of violence.
Corado quickly got involved in community activism while also navigating both her transition and learning she was HIV-positive.
Because of complications from her HIV medication, she developed a condition that affects how the body stores and distributes fat tissue. She says it was like her butt was "erasing." At the same time, she was already contending with the pressures of conventional beauty standards. Meeting those standards can be a boon to a trans woman's self-esteem; breaking them can put a target on her back.
"Having access to an illegal treatment allowed me to have the body that I saw in my mind," Corado says. "Allowed me to address my deep mental health issues with gender dysphoria."
In the same time frame, more than half of people who sought coverage for transition-related surgery were turned down. And 1 in 3 said they hadn't seen a doctor for any reason in the past year because they couldn't afford it.

Why should it surprize anyone that they cant get insurance coverage for a condition that promises nothing but endless demands for medical care.
Trans people first want hormone therapy that causes medical problems and can never end.
Then they want surgery that can cause other medical issues.
None of these treatments are medically necessary and are not shown to be therapeutic to the underlying psychological problem.
So, for the insurance company Transexuals are a lose-lose situation.
To add in to this losing prospect of this man, he already has a sever medical problem of his own making. Why should an insurance company take on a client that it would be impossible to make money with and why should they be required to?
No need to excerpt NPR, I think.
It is, after all, already “public”
Saying “she” a lot does not turn a man into a woman.
Exactly. Biology is a proven science. That transgender is not a she, its a he.
Moral cripple. Mentally ill. Chronic disease.
Yeah, these are the people we want to invite in.
“Why should an insurance company take on a client that it would be impossible to make money with and why should they be required to?”
Because there’s a moral fabric of society that has to be unraveled and rewoven by our betters. The profits of insurance companies are irrelevant to that cause.
“A transgender woman from El Salvador, she moved to Washington, D.C....”
She, eh? And one wonders why NPR has the credibility of Sloe Joe.
Stunning and brave.
Defund NPR
A society that promotes insanity is an insane society . So-called “progressives “ and their indiscriminate acceptance of the mentally ill as normal and desirable are malignancies on civil society everywhere .
It will be a good day when someone does a study on just how many people at NPR are homosexuals.
Defund NPR

It’s a parasite on the budget.
Denial of mental illness to bolster self esteem is in itself mental illness. Get the crazy out of medicine and education.
When the Republicans took legislative power in 2010 but continued to fund NPR and Planned Parenthood, it was obvious nothing was going to change.
XX= Woman
XY = Man
Thats it. Nothing else counts.
But, but, what about their feeeeeeeeelings?
Consider a transsexual woman. She's had a breast reduction and a hysterectomy. The hysterectomy damaged her vaginal nerves, so an orgasm is impossible, and the hormones she must take forever dried up the internal moisture, so she has constant infections.
Gay men will reject her, because she is a mutilated woman. They hate women.
Gay women reject her, because she wants to be a man. They hate men.
Straight women reject her, because they don't like gay women.
She rejects straight men, who reject her, because she is nuts, and Rule #1 says to not screw someone crazier than you.
The only other option is jumping off the Golden Gate bridge... Hitting the water at about 120mph, the body tends to shatter. The skin keeps the bits together, but it's like a plastic bag full of Jello...
Im both disgusted and confused. Is this wreck of a human, a male wannabe female? Or a female wannabe male?
Here we have a probably illegal alien tranny who came to this country with HIV and all the massive health care costs associated with AIDS who also adds the also astronomical cost of transgender drugs to the health maintenance costs and is getting this all on the public dime
What the moron of a reporter glosses over is that for a doctor to prescribe transgender hormone drugs to a long time HIV patient is a serious breach of medical ethics as the drugs have very negative impact on the course of HIV treatment.
The transvestite is destroying his health by maintaining his female looks via massive hormone ingestion and further destroying his health by pursuing and dangerous, unapproved and illegal cosmetic procedures.
This behavior is incredibly self destructive and this trans person is obviously seriously mentally ill.
Supporting and enabling this mentally ill self destruction is also incredibly and insanely expensive.
And the American taxpayer is footing the bill for all of this as we are paying the medical bills and almost certainly the cost of the constellation of government welfare program payments to support this persons lifestyle
Can someone please try to explain to a middle class family struggling to make ends meet why their hard earned tax dollars are being squandered in extravagant fashion on an an HIV Positive, transgender illegal alien when the family cant even afford to take their kids to a doctor without fear of financial ruin from copays and insane deductibles
Its really infuriating how badly our system is being abused.
We live a world of de facto health care rationing and its very disturbing to see how our political class prioritizes the allocation of health care spending dollars.
