Listen to Taurus for yourself, starting at 0:45. Zeppelin opened for Spirit and must have heard this song at some point. That, and given Zeppelin's predeliction to, erm, borrow from other musicians and bands, I don't see how anyone could rule for Zeppelin.

The main issue for me, however, is that Randy California never sued before his tragic death...if he didn't want to sue, then his estate suing is odd to say the least.

Besides, everyone knows Zeppelin's best song is Achilles Last Stand.

I saw Spirit back in the 80s. Great band. 12 Dreams was a fabulous album.

But wait a minute. This can’t be! I thought the Trump Administration was a bunch of tight-asses who hated music and sided with those eeeeeevil record companies?

“I don’t see how anyone could rule for Zeppelin. “

The answer is in your OP.

Of course it’s an utter rip off.

This is based on a technicality, not that it’s not a rip off.

A walk down is a walk down. The way zep resolves it at the end is different from the way Spirit does it. They just leave it hanging.

Here’s my opinion of Led Zeppelin:

When asked if I had a time machine would I go back and kill baby Hitler, I say no....Jimmy Page.

So many of us believed their music was original. The joke was on us. lol

They just might’ve “borrowed” most of their music. The deeper you go, the more you find.

The Eagles rip-off of Jethro Tull’s “We Used to Know” for “Hotel California” was more blatant.

I love Stairway to Heaven--a big hit in the spring of 1960.

Zeppelin was the best cover band if all time. Most of the songs on their early albums were plagiarized, we just didn't have the Internet back then to know. Truth is Stairway wasn't the first , many of the artist they ripped off were settled with out of court

...

IIRC, the melody is traditional. Nobody has a copyright on it.

Taurus is a really nice song.

The same chord progression was used any nuber of times decades before Taurus. Spirit stole it themselves.

Unfortunately for Spirit and Randy's estate, is that "Stairway To Heaven" will always be considered a brilliant timeless classic, and "Taurus" won't.

Besides, "Stairway" is much much more than just that opening arpeggiated chord progression. OK, yes, it starts with that progression, but then dynamically builds up to the high flying coda at the finale.

"Taurus" doesn't even come close to the entire composition nor performance that is "Stairway".

Just MHO ;)
