The space rock designated as a near-Earth object, because its orbit takes it within 30 million miles of our planet is expected to come within about 4.55 million miles of us as it whizzes by at 10,400 mph.
Anything that gets closer than 0.05 astronomical units roughly 4.65 million miles is considered potentially hazardous.
The asteroid, dubbed 2006 QQ23, is 1,870 feet in diameter

I made a thread that tied to this concept of a devastating asteroid impact and the survival of the human race. The keys to surviving an asteroid strike, as a species, are 1. massive technological advancement fueled by economic expansion and population expansion, and 2. Colonizing structures/planets other than earth.

10 years until the oceans rise and we need to flee now, per yang. He sez it is too late now, so buy that ocean view property in Arizona.

I don’t know anything about the movement of such objects, but is 20 times as far away as the moon really that close?

We will be fine. It's about 600m long but the chance of impact is remote.

If the oceans rise enough to crest the mountains between California and Arizona, it’s gonna flood Arizona, too.

If the oceans rise enough to crest the mountains between California and Arizona, its gonna flood Arizona, too. Pournelle and Niven explained in "Lucifer's Hammer" that that could not happen - the amount of energy needed to drive water that far inland is beyond what an asteroid or comet impact could produce. In their novel a few miles inland from the coast went under, as did all of California's low-lying Central Valley. The Sierra foothills were the safe zone that the main characters retreated to.
