Americans speak a ton of languages, and this map shows which languages other than English and Spanish are the most common in each state and Washington, D.C.

The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey annually asks more than 1 million Americans questions about their lives, families, and backgrounds. One question asks respondents what language they mainly speak in their homes.

Using individual-level responses from the 2017 American Community Survey assembled and published by the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series program, we found the most common language spoken at home in each state, excluding English and Spanish.

I decided to look up where New Jerseyans got their accent from, and was surprises that it was from 17th century Europe. However that Joisey stuff came from Brooklyners who moved here.

I was born and bred near Boston, but married New Jersey. Still have my Boston accent, altho now I call one son MaRk instead of MaHk.

There are many regional dialects in the Philippines, over 150 of them.. Many people can not speak any other than their own, making it difficult to have a unified country.
The government has made Tagalog/Pilipino the National language. This has met with resistance in local areas people who resist being told to speak Tagalog, which is the dialect of the Manila area, rather than their own.

The residents of the individual islands or districts have their own cultural identity and are proud of that. Many island/districts, have been labeled, by other Filipinos, with reputations associated with a unique character of their local culture.

The Ilocanos, who live in northern Luzon, have a reputation of being “frugal” or “parsimonious”,

Or, as said in the Philippines, to have “deep pockets and short arms”.

My daughter worked in the tourism industry in Honolulu for four years. Her coworkers were a wonderful mix of people from all over the Pacific and a large number of Filipinos. The Pacific Islander culture was a joy.

She obviously never met a Hawaiian native who had a chip on his shoulder about "Haolies". Not that they liked any other group any better.

She knew of them and was warned about them. I think she ran into some occasionally. She worked with really warm, caring professionals.

Pennsylvania Dutch is widespread here in the Amish and Mennonite communities, but virtually all of them speak English as well.

That was my experience living in Pennsylvania as well.

Except when one wanted to pretend he/she didn’t speak English.

I taught elementary reading to adults, many of whom didn’t know the alphabet. Almost all students were inner city blacks.

I found that the most eager and dedicated were older people and learn, they did. The most common goal among them was to learn to read their bible, so I incorporated it into the lesson plan and received not one single complaint about it.

The experience was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. I have received thank you letters from some of my former students, which I will always cherish.

Those grandchildren may be called “Americans” but their definition of America will be far different than what it is now and drastically different from what it was when I was a child 80 years ago.

Words have meanings but the socialists keep changing those meanings so that the original is forgotten and the new is supportive of socialism/communism.

Just as they have changed the colors associated with their party and socialism in the USA. Years ago the color “Red” was always associated with communism. The main stream media saw that association harmful to the socialists and reversed the color association.

They started to identify anything conservative with the color “red” so as to taint conservatives with the association of that color with socialism/communism

And that, my friends is how the color “red” came to represent conservatives and the color “blue” came to represent the socialist/communists.

Change the definition and change the public
perception.

The map is fascinating, but potentially misleading. The only reason that German is #3 in South Carolina, and Korean in Georgia and Alabama is because of the Mercedes Benz, Kia, and Hyundai plants in those states. That doesn’t mean a whole lot of people speak the language, compared to Haitian Creole in Florida or French in Louisiana.
