Russia will address the United Nations to declare victory in World War II as the ‘heritage of humanity,’ while also making the monuments to those who fought against the Nazis as part of a global memorial.
The speaker of the Upper House of the Russian Parliament, Valentina Matviyenko, shared those plans with UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). Russian MPs have already made the same offer to their colleagues in foreign parliaments, she added.
The Federation Council speaker vowed that the parliament will to do everything to make sure “that no dirty hand will be allowed to destroy the monuments to those who died while protecting Europe; defending it from Nazis.”
She also decried the Western attempts to diminish the decisive role of the Soviet Union in the WWII victory, warning that attempts to rewrite history cause the rise of neo-Nazism in Europe and elsewhere.

The Russians push the simplistic version they were victims, when Stalin already had them internally in a state of war for a decade. they had committed a brutal genocide in Ukraine, and had participated in the invasion of Poland and Finland . How many of their war dead were soldiers being shot by their own government? Reprisals from angry Ukrainians or Belorussians?

I guess choosing to do nothing versus actively invading another country are basically the same.
The winter weather played a major role in the defeat of the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front, but the brutality and sacrifice of the Russian soldier cannot be overlooked nor can the fight or be killed behavior of the commissars, which forced them to fight enough to resist the initial assault combined with Hitler’s stupidity.
Once the Russian Army was fully mobilized the end of the Wehrmacht was certain. Hitler’s idiotic blitzkrieg to the east failed miserably. They did not have the numbers or the logistical train to win so when Hitler chose to divert his forces from Moscow to capture irrelevant cities he assured himself defeat.
What happened afterwards was brutal. The subjugation of the Eastern Bloc countries was a stain on the history of humanity. However, you must give a hat tip to the Soviet soldier for their battlefield performance. The Army that entered Berlin was likely one of the most battle-hardened armies in the history of mankind. They would accept almost any loss to achieve the objective by sheer will and weight.
Victor Davis Hanson’s recent book on WWII is worth a read. Excellent book that will change your view from “the battles” to the much larger picture.

Russians can claim battlefield heroics all they want, but the lend-lease agreement meant that much of the machinery the Russians used to beat the Germans came from the Americans.
Thus a brutal winter and the lend-lease agreement saved the Russians necks.

Anyone think the Reds win without these? Let alone the diversion of German resources caused by: 24hour bombing; the need to confront Allies in North Africa and the Med; the need to defend against invasion from Norway to Spain.
I cannot believe the numbers of so called educated people I have encountered who have no knowledge or understanding of these facts.
The Nazis were Sunshine soldiers only. Got it. That also explains why they prevailed in North Africa.

You nailed it about the Soviets basically being at War for a decade before World War II began. And it was the war Stalin declared on his own people.
All of that plus a brutal Russian winter shortly before, during and after the battle of Stalingrad decimated the Germans in the east.

Germans always have an excuse.... and nazis assists have apologists. Stephen Ambrose said it best In “citizen-soldiers”. In all of World War II, the only time you were safe and treated decently was when an American Soldier came into your town.
False Comparison on your part.
One can be beat by superior tactics and better leaders on the other side in North Africa and lose to a nasty winter in another region of the world.
The point is, the lend-lease agreement is objective data, and it gave the Russians equipment, tanks, aircraft, and on and on, and the Russian winter killed so many Germans the Russians never laid a hand on, thus also objectively verified.
Battlefield heroics claimed by Russians is hardly objective data.
I am the past person who would be an apologist for the Germans or the Nazis.
American know-how, American arms, the lend-lease agreement, and the Russian winter is what beat the Nazis.
