Which risk factor is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other? Not smoking. Not even high blood pressure. It's a poor diet.
"In many countries, poor diet now causes more deaths than tobacco smoking and high blood pressure," said Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

And it's not just that people are choosing unhealthy options such as red meat and sugary sodas. Just as critical, said Afshin, the lead author of a 27-year global diet analysis published Wednesday in the journal the Lancet, is the lack of healthy foods in our diets, along with high levels of salt.
"While traditionally all the conversation about healthy diet has been focused on lowering the intake of unhealthy food, in this study, we have shown that, at the population level, a low intake of healthy foods is the more important factor, rather than the high intake of unhealthy foods," he said.
One in five deaths globally -- that's about 11 million people -- in 2017 occurred because of too much sodium and a lack of whole grains, fruit and nuts and seeds, the study found, rather than from diets packed with trans fats, sugar-sweetened drinks and high levels of red and processed meats.

Not true. Crap fuel will give you crap MPG, and could clog up fuel injectors. It won’t necessarily ruin your engine.
What ruins car engines is running on low coolant, making it run hotter and that burns up valves. Another thing which will ruin the car engine is using low quality oil and keeping it too long in the engine and letting the level drop below recommended.
You need to drink 2 beer cans to get the same high as one good shot of bourbon. Which results in injecting many more calories and acquiring a beer gut.
Are you speaking ill of my gluten free, GMO free, probiotic, organic health drink?
Are you speaking ill of my onboard survival food storage chamber?
But how can you stand that stuff? I used to sip an occasional Jack Daniels until I was struck with an epiphany. This stuff tastes like concentrated puke.
And you can run your lawnmower off of it.
...there is little to no scientific evidence linking prediabetes to diabetes. ... prediabetes has not been found to cause health problems in people who have been so diagnosed.
Piller outlines the history of the coinage of the term, relating that it came about as representatives from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and other diabetes-related institutions met to discuss the possible implications of patients with above-normal levels of glucose in their blood. The fear was that prediabetes would lead to full-blown diabetes and thus there existed an opportunity to prevent the disease if prediabetes could be treated.
Piller argues that the problem was a lack of evidence to suggest that might be the case. But that did not stop the CDC and many other institutions from adopting the term and using it as a warning marker for people with elevated glucose levels. Piller also suggests another problem. The ADA is a nonprofit organization and relies on donations to survive. Much of those funds, he found, come from pharmaceutical companies that sell drugs such as metformin, which have been developed to reduce the damage that diabetes does to the body.
Piller reports that in recent years, the ADA has lowered the conditions required to be diagnosed as prediabetic, resulting in far more people being diagnosed as such, a move he suggests could have been due to pressure from its pharmaceutical partners hoping to cash in on treatment products. This is because some doctors have begun prescribing medications to patients diagnosed as prediabetic. Some have even begun to prescribe drugs such as metformin to patients who do not even have diabetes, all in the name of preventing them from getting it.
But not everyone is on the prediabetes bandwagon, Piller points out. The World Health Organization has rejected it as a diagnosis, as have many other institutions around the world. There is also trouble with the numberstens of millions of people have been diagnosed as prediabetic, far more than will ever develop the disease. He cites an example: approximately 16 million people in the U.K. have been diagnosed as prediabetic, but only 3.3 million people there actually have type 2 diabetes.
He concludes by suggesting that coinage of the term has led to classifying many healthy people as having an illness, which has led to negative consequences for them such as financial losses due to having to pay for care, and unnecessary anxiety.

Your taste buds need re-calibrated. I'm no JD fan (it is drinkable though) but if you something really putrid try Scotch. Think of JD that had cigarette butts in it a month and then strained out. Gin tastes like after shave lotion. If you want pleasure, try Fireball Whisky for cinnamon flavor or Ouzo for anise flavor.
Well, I thought it was global warming or climate change depending on the time of year or who the majority party is in congress.
Na, the only hard stuff I drink now is vodka. Pretty much just alcohol and water, sort of like gin, but you know it does taste like aftershave. Funny. I have to slow down however because of my age.
The Obesity Code by DR. Jason Fung answers all of your questions. My wife is off all medication including insulin and trulicity. She was pre-diabetic until a hospital stay made her full blown diabetic through their incompetence. She’s okay now though.
I used to drink Cruzan Rum mixed but since I started watching what I eat I started watching what I drink. I crossed out alcohol, all sodas except for Fruit Punch or Lemonade, all beef unless it’s Vietnamese stir fried thin strips, I eat all the fish, unfried white meats and cooked vegetables I can get my hands on. My whole body had become thinner & my stomach & sides have no handles.
Good points, perhaps the better analogy is using crap fuel sure ain’t going to let you run at your optimum, and garbage food is like garbage oil.
If someone believes in evolution, or divine creation, there’s just no point in fueling either a magnificent machine or God’s creation with crap.
It’s not really that hard, or expensive to eat healthily, but it does take more thought than just shoveling stuff into our bodies that’s been carefully engineered to suit our taste buds but not carry good nutrition-for-caloric content.

I LOVE Nina!
I suggest that you get someone, with much better skills than you have, read and explain it to you.
Yes, I DO know the minimum need daily salt consumption, which most, though not all people need daily, as well as what is now claimed to be "too high". It WILL vary from person to person, including where one lives, the season of the year, and exercise/work one does or doesn't do.
I don't have a "problem" with salt intake.
Nobody/no government entity is "forcing" anyone to over indulge in ingesting salt.
Especially the ones that include grains that even cattle won't eat.
“Note that its nearly impossible to lose more than 2 lbs a week of actual body mass as your body will react if you try to cut your intake below about 1,200-1,500 calories a day by trimming its metabolic rate, thwarting what youre trying to do. So dont; starving yourself is bad news.”
Actually many people, myself included, fast a week or more at a time (I sometimes go up to 10 days)...and with me it is total - water, black coffee, and nothing else. A bit sporty for the first few days, but we are designed for feast/fast, as that what life was like before Big Food demanded that we eat ‘3 healthy meals a day’. So, if you’re reasonably healthy, fasting is fine, and it TOTALLY RESETS stuff like insulin resistance, which is a great thing. But if you do try it, build up. Skip breakfast first (and no, as you noted, the world doesn’t end). Then try skipping breakfast and lunch - and finally try to go through a whole day, around 36 hours - then you’re well on your way! And no, you’re not starving yourself, assuming that you have the body fat and keep it to no more than 3 weeks (far more than my longest).
Other than that, excellent write up - very little to disagree with - you nailed it on salt, fat, and especially carbs! One thing to keep in mind is a person by the name of Norman Borlaug - he hybridized wheat which increased its yields by huge amounts, as in multiples - and with that, ended world starvation due to lack of food (people do still starve, but in every case now it is people who don’t have guns being denied available food by people who do have guns). But there was a flip side to Borlaug’s amazing work - he developed strains of wheat that the human body had trouble dealing with...and doesn’t know when to tell the brain enough is enough - hence the obesity outbreak started virtually to the day his hybridized wheat become widely used!
No, they keep pushing that because they want us dead.
I’m here for the soylent green.
