Which risk factor is responsible for more deaths around the world than any other? Not smoking. Not even high blood pressure. It's a poor diet.
"In many countries, poor diet now causes more deaths than tobacco smoking and high blood pressure," said Ashkan Afshin, an assistant professor at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

And it's not just that people are choosing unhealthy options such as red meat and sugary sodas. Just as critical, said Afshin, the lead author of a 27-year global diet analysis published Wednesday in the journal the Lancet, is the lack of healthy foods in our diets, along with high levels of salt.
"While traditionally all the conversation about healthy diet has been focused on lowering the intake of unhealthy food, in this study, we have shown that, at the population level, a low intake of healthy foods is the more important factor, rather than the high intake of unhealthy foods," he said.
One in five deaths globally -- that's about 11 million people -- in 2017 occurred because of too much sodium and a lack of whole grains, fruit and nuts and seeds, the study found, rather than from diets packed with trans fats, sugar-sweetened drinks and high levels of red and processed meats.

Irish coffee is the perfect food because it contains all four food groups; sugar, far, caffeine and alcohol.
Oh well, we’ll all be dead in 12 years anyway, per AOC.
You mean fat. That is in fact a food group. The most basic of them.
That is definitely part of the equation. The other part isn’t even discussed in the article. I’ll source the study’s paper later, but I bet it doesn’t mention any of my concerns whatsoever.
When you eat carb rich foods you get too much glucose in your blood. Your body creates insulin to get rid of the excess. It gets rid of it by storing it as fat. As you get fatter you need more insulin to keep storing it and eventually you can’t create enough any more and are diabetic. Taking more insulin just deals with the symptoms while aggravating the underlying problem. I was diagnosed borderline diabetic. After a year on low carb diet I lost 45 pounds and no longer show as diabetic on my blood test.
Very helpful information. In the first 5 days of keto, I’ve completely lost my appetite for snacks. I have lost the water weight you mentioned with many trips to the restroom.
My doctor told me I was pre-diabetic and I’m sure I’ve developed insulin resistance. In just 5 days, I feel more energetic and do more things. Breaking away from carbohydrates is going to help drop pounds and improve overall health.
Thanks for the insightful post.
“Note that its nearly impossible to lose more than 2 lbs a week of actual body mass “
Your hypothesis is defective: I lost an average of a pound a day eating eggs & toast for breakfast, a hamburger for lunch and a single-serving pizza for dinner. It is absolutely possible to lose body mass (FAT, not muscle) without starving the body of calories.
It’s a lot more complicated than counting calories, but a LOT simpler than your outline; however, my own detailed description makes yours look like a single period in a lake. The problem is that most no one can grasp what it takes.
But I can’t tell you why (secret until published).
Yes, typing on a tablet. Between the tiny keys and crazy auto correct I get some odd results.
And the milk has more sugar.
Check this out. it is kinda long so just view the first ten minutes and the last ten minutes.
It basically advocates a Vegan diet.
I would go there but I am afraid that I will get pointed ears like Mr. Spock

You are missing an important group...Tequila or Bourbon.

I think beer is part of that food group. Only a much less, um, pure source.
I just don’t like the after taste of sugar but, I luvs me some diet soda...
1. Balanced diet - meats (ALL of them are OK), vegatables (the more variety the better), fruits (again variety is good), grains, nuts, fats, liquids (milk and water are better than juices & yes alcoholic beverages are not taboo and neither is tea or coffee).
2. Natural is better than artificial, even when it comes to sweeteners and fats. Eat foods not chemicals - as much as possible (I use real “raw sugar”, real butter never margarines and if I must have a soda beveridge it is not “diet”.)
3. All things in moderation accepted, and that goes for food as well. Excess is the opposite of moderation and it pertains to portion sizes, concentrating the diet on too few things and/or too few kinds of food, or simply consuming something to an excess. Whereas they say “variety is the spice of life” your body likes you to feed it variety too.
4. Daily physical activity - don’t be a couch potatoe all day.
Those simple rules are enough, for good health and lack of obesity.
