At least part of the online vitriol seems to stem from fans misunderstanding "Marvel" star Brie Larson's call for more inclusivity during press tours into an attack on white men overall.

"Not interested in supporting Brie Larson's agenda."
"Tired of all this SJW nonsense"
"Marvel Execs are all ready bragging that Captain Marvel is "the most powerful hero" in the Marvel universe. This pretty much guarantees that she is going to be a total Mary Sue. I could buy that line except Larson has been preaching the SJW gospel throughout the production. This isn't some sudden, out-of-context quoting. She's pretty insufferable on the topic.

It hasn’t been released yet, so any reviews like that are going to be from people that the studio gave an advance screening to. It’s standard industry practice now with big movies like this to gin up positive reviews from sympathetic critics before release just to pump up your RT score. Look at any of the massive flops that studios were building up to be hits in the last few years, they all had inflated critic RT scores before release, but horrible customer reviews after release.

I think you are correct. I work with a guy who is conservative, pro-Trump, etc. He'll be there opening day. He loves these Super Hero movies, and he probably thinks Brie Larson is hot. I'll be skipping it because I am sick of these movies.
The challenge these actors are faced with is that every interviewer they speak with is going to try to work in some anti-Trump, intersectional SJW narrative because they're consumed by it. Of course, all these actors hold the same political views as the people interviewing them so it's easy for them to step in it. Since they've never met anyone outside their bubble of angry SJWs, they're genuinely shocked to learn that their comments pissed off a lot of potential fans and cost them money.
