This guy built a ‘glitter bomb’ and filmed Amazon thieves getting their just deserts.

You really shouldn’t steal from Mark Rober. I mean, you shouldn’t steal from anyone, but you REALLY shouldn’t steal Mark Rober’s mail.

The engineer and YouTube star really knows his stuff - he literally helped design the Mars Rover. But when Rober realized people were stealing his packages (he caught the thieves on his home video) he was stumped.

In a video that has immediately gone viral, Rober says he reported the crime to the local police who said they simply didn’t have time investigate the incident, even though Rober had done much of the heavy lifting by capturing the incident on his home surveillance camera.

Rather than go full vigilante, Rober did something far more brilliant: He built a custom made “glitter bomb” inside a fake Amazon package.

The package also included four Internet cameras, so he could capture the whole thing on film. Oh, and he also loaded it with fart spray.

I only wish it could end with the thieves in the slammer, but still, this is good stuff.

The trap looks far more expensive than anything I’d order, but it’s a clever idea. Dye would be better. The car or residence would be ruined, and the thief would be limited in public activities if the dye hits their faces.

I wish I were smart enough to engineer this kind of stuff. I could think of lots of applications.

Skunk smell oil. It won’t come off unless you use some special soap.

Even dumb or lazy cops could find the perps. Their neighbors would turn them in just to stop the smell.

Back in the early 80s, I worked in a 24/7 main frame computer facility. My desk was situated between a few huge memory boxes and was constantly being rummaged through with things disappearing. I rigged up a spring loaded contraption in the top drawer that was full of printer dust from these huge IBM impact printers. Came in one morning to find one of the midnight crew covered in black ink dust (had a white shirt on, too)..I just smiled and said good morning. Never had my desk robbed again. :) Well worth the 2 hours it took me to clean up my desk and the area around my desk.

Lawyers will probably ruin this by suing the man on behalf of the robbers...

The shiny flecks are made of tiny pieces of plastic and when washed away can end up in rivers, lakes and the sea, contaminating the water and poisoning marine life.

Well, that was gay. A more mechanical device activated on the porch would have worked, and dye and prosecution would be better.

I don’t think a device activated on the porch would be smart. You could have neighbors, mailmen, deliverymen, kids, anyone else legitimate come to your porch for any number of reasons and end up being covered in dye. In order to gauge intent the package has to be removed from the location.

OK, so you just pissed off someone who stole your package, and covered them in glitter and fart spray.

They now know where you live. Be prepared for broken windows, keyed car doors, or worse.

The real question is whether this guy will make more money on his sponsored video than he will have to pay out on the lawsuits?

Good point. It could still be simplified, though, and dye would be a better choice. And every residential block should have a license plate cam on it. Might as well get something useful out of privately owned surveillance, with publicly owned surveillance about to be extended like a plague.
