The Most Contrarian College in America
The New York Times ^ | Sept 11, 2018 | Frank Bruni

SANTA FE, N.M. — Have I got a college for you. For your first two years, your regimen includes ancient Greek. And I do mean Greek, the language, not Greece, the civilization, though you’ll also hang with Aristotle, Aeschylus, Thucydides and the rest of the gang. There’s no choice in the matter. There’s little choice, period.

Let your collegiate peers elsewhere design their own majors and frolic with Kerouac. For you it’s Kant. You have no major, only “the program,” an exploration of the Western canon that was implemented in 1937 and has barely changed.

It’s intense. Learning astronomy and math, you don’t merely encounter Copernicus’s conclusions. You pore over his actual words. You’re not simply introduced to the theory of relativity. You read “Relativity,” the book that Albert Einstein wrote.

Diversions are limited. There’s no swimming team. No pool. The dorms are functional; same goes for the dining. You’re not here for banh mi. You’re here for Baudelaire.

I used to pass by there and would stop for Shakespeare plays in their outdoor theatre on Sunday evenings. I recall a lot of grout oriented poetry on the walls of the bathroom there.

Hopefully St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas are part of the liturature mix.

Our founding fathers just read the books.

The NYT writer just had to include, “The degree to which “the program” omits the intellectual contributions of women and people of color troubles me.”

Not to worry, most 8th graders today probably know as much or more about Harriet Tubman as they do about George Washington. Most probably could tell you nothing about James Madison or Alexander Hamilton.

Had a friend who went there, thought he was going to change the world. He had a great party as the going away present, spoke heroically and left. After a year he bailed, went back to a major college and wanted to make the football team. Pfff......

I don't think so. The leftists would have the students studying feminist authors, historians of color and LGBT philosophy.

This could actually be one of the few conservative dream colleges. A great place to start if you wanted to challenge the liberal elites in academia, journalism, or the arts.

But of course "real conservatives" are only supposed to be interested in practical pursuits such as engineering. We leave all that liberal arts nonsense to the liberals.

But how has that worked out for us?

Sounds Like a great General Education experience. Do they except Government Money (and interference)?

Hillsdale College in Michigan does not except government money and interference and it is a fine school.

Correct. This college offers a classic, well-rounded education. The very content, structure, and rigor of its program are the antithesis of the modern university.

"But how has that worked out for us?"

If you have a desire and interest in practical hands-on experience as a young person from say 8 to 15 years of age, you cultivate that by getting employment in a company which will expand your knowledge.

You also must excel in Math and the Physical Sciences in Middle and High School.

Then if you can perform in the above two endeavors, you will get accepted to an Engineering School, preferably with a co-op program providing on-the-job experience that cannot be taught in the classrooms.

With that background you will become a useful and productive member of society, acquiring enough personal wealth to become a conservative voice in your community.

I like it. If you had to wear a toga to philosophy class, that would really be the deal.

“This college is a leftist‘s dream.”

No it’s not. An example from American History of that this classical education can lead to are the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. Probably the poster child of a product of a classical education in that era is Thomas Jefferson.
