A mere 2 hours before his grisly murder about 5,300 years ago, Ötzi the iceman chowed down on some mouthwatering morsels: wild meat from ibex and red deer, cereals from einkorn wheat and oddly enough poisonous fern, a new study finds.
It's unclear why Ötzi ate the toxic fern, known as bracken (Pteridium aquilinum). But it's possible that he used the fern to wrap his food, almost like a piece of plastic wrap, and then unintentionally ingested some of the toxic spores the fern left behind, said study co-senior researcher Albert Zink, head of the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies in Bolzano, Italy.
Or perhaps Ötzi ate the fern as a type of medicine to treat his intestinal parasites, Zink said..."
This discovery comes from the first in-depth study of the iceman mummy's stomach. German hikers found the frozen remains while hiking in the Italian Alps in 1991. Since then, researchers have gleaned details about Ötzi's life by studying his remains and belongings including that Ötzi had 61 tattoos, arthritis, bad teeth and a possible case of Lyme disease. Researchers even found that Ötzi had sharpened his tools days before his murder. ..."
One thing was certain: Ötzi's diet was heavy in fat, but this wasn't from cheese, as researchers previously guessed, said Zink and study co-senior researcher Frank Maixner, a microbiologist at the Eurac Research Institute for Mummy Studies. Rather, the fat came from an animal Ötzi had recently consumed, likely the ibex (Capra ibex), Zink said.
This finding made sense, as earlier research revealed that Ötzi had lactose intolerance and thus had trouble eating dairy products, Zink added. The iceman likely needed the calories from this fatty meal to help him scale the Alps, where he lived, the researchers said.

I like me some Ibex myself as well, marinated with a little garlic, Worcestershire and Frank’s red hot.
The way this man is being treated in his after life, makes me want to be cremated.
Of interest this guy was a meat eater. I find it odd the lefties haven’t faked the report to show he was a solid vegan.
Also of interest are the tatoos. I’ve often heard there’s not much different between man of several thousand years ago to man of today other than the advances brought by science and technology. Sorta blows the evolutionary theory out of the water.
Not sure if this is suppose to be a surprise or what, it’s well known that early man consumed large amounts of fat, Native Americans were no different. Pemmican was nothing more than dried meat and fat/grease, sometime having local berries added. Packed in a gut or intestine it had a lengthy shelf life. The original survival food, dense in protein and calories.
When you look at some of the flint artifacts from that time period you quickly understand the skill and intelligence required. There were no books or any means of recording history so everything had to be shared verbally and remembered. Native Americans told stories of their past to the younger ones in great detail. The mental maps they had to store for life in order to navigate throughout the area. Water here, food sources there, where to find the best chert for making stone points and blades, where caches of blades and point material were hidden for further use. Running out of knappable stone was no different than running out of ammunition.
Is that anything like Lidl?
im wondering if the meat was cooked or not
Thanks.
5,300 years ago is current events in geological terms.
I perceive that you have made a deep study of the topic, and after close examination of all the available evidence, have come to a rock-solid conclusion.
Regards,
5300 years ago is not even a gnats eye blink. Otzi is the best preserved body of a European man of that era. Trying to tie it in some way to making a statement pro or con about evolution is ridiculous!
Next season on CBS.
Or maybe Otzi “fought the law and the law won.”
Cereals? Fascinating! My favorite is Cocoa pebbles!
Not following you.... what do tatoos have to do with evolution of man?
