Sam Houston was kicked out as governor of Texas because he was a Unionist.

Actually, the Texas holiday was established long before the MLK one so, if anything, you’d have to argue that having MLK the same week is a slap in the other direction.

I believe that many Texans see Jorge P as a slap in the face.

660,000 men died in the Civil War . . . to not honor at least half of these men is disgusting and totally un-American. When will this trashing of these heroes stop? A clear example of the total stupidity of most of America of the causes and heartache of the Civil war.

Houston is more complicated than that
He was a slave owner and opposed abolition but he also apposed secession
He refused Lincoln offer to sent federals to forcibly squash secession support in Texas so he effectively stepped and let his lt governor take his place
He believed in states rights but he feared the federal government and its power to defeat he south
He was historically as we know a cautious military man and he was prescient obviously about the future
But an ardent unionist he was not.....he knew odds were long for Dixie
