Ban your EarBuds and Head phones in public

Posted on 11/01/2017 7:28:31 AM PDT by CGASMIA68

Been telling folks lately to be aware. Take out those ear plugs so you can hear whats going on around you. God gave us ears to hear dangers along with all the other sound waves. Look at the gym for instance. If Abdul came in blazing how long would it take for 90% to hear it. It would be too long and too late. Told the kids, keep your ears open these days you may hear danger b4 you see it.

Reason is common sense and sign of the times and there was no mention of NYC.
Other posters brought it up

I work in a busy office building.

It pisses me off to no end to have to watch out for and dodge the morons who wander aimlessly down the hall while staring at their cellphones while texting away.

Once in awhile I refuse to give way and when they nearly run into me with an “Ooops, sorry”; I glare at them and say “Please don’t do that.”

I typically will stop and let them run into me. It’s great fun.

The bike/pedestrian trail I ride regularly (Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail) has rule signs at frequent intervals. Among those rules is one forbidding bicyclists from wearing headphones & earphones which just echoes Florida driving laws. What do I see? Need I say?

Myself, I ride with an iPhone on my handlebar playing classical music. It is soft enough that I do hear all traffic. At least half the time I never even turn it on because being outdoors is enough by itself!

Not in favor of a ban and I certainly endorse situational awareness as a key survival skill. The best part is that SA comes naturally if we simply practice it. As someone who gets in the woods regularly, I can definitely say I highly value my hearing as a first indicator of game in the area. It almost always precedes a visual clue.

I recommend you wear them while walking in urban areas, but don’t really listen to anything. They are a great tool for avoiding homeless beggars.

In that scenario I would rather have them connected to a mini amp to ad some gain to surrounding noises such as any youts wanting to do me harm

Point well taken, although I don’t think outright *banning* earbuds is the answer. My biggest gripe with earbuds is how they generally make people appear unapproachable and anti-social. Like preoccupation with smartphones, earbuds just make it much more difficult to engage in friendly conversation with others (or flirt with members of the opposite sex), especially in public settings like a gym.

Sadly, I believe America has pretty much decayed into a social graveyard since the turn of the century as more and more folks elect to constantly “plug in” to technology (which is especially observable among Millennials). For all these reasons and more, I won’t wear earbuds out in public and instead prefer to play music directly from my phone speaker at a low volume. This way, I can also still keep my ears fully attuned to the world around me and help maintain my personal safety in the process.

If I walk a track i tend to wear my buds or headset to listen to music

In deep woods especially at night I don’t use music

In daytime deep woods in depends but usually it’s Pink Floyd early stuff

Yesterday I walked deep woods midday in Maury county tennessee

Earbuds with Bauhaus on in keeping with 10/31

I think we grown ups can figure this one out for ourselves

Should I only wear my VR headset indoors, then?
Geez, I was just getting used to all the horn honking and yelling.

Keep the sound low but keep the earbuds on in urban areas—when the panhandlers approach and start talking to you just point to the earbuds. It works!

Good idea. I have a friend who starts jabbering in Slovak when he’s approached by panhandlers. I guess that’ll work too...until he runs into a Slovak panhandler.

Funny you mention the gym. Where Mrs.subterfuge and I go there are a LOT of Muslims. At the YMCA.

The ymCa! Emphasis on the “C.”

We’re finding a new gym.
