The Navy's newest, most sophisticated aircraft carrier doesn't have urinals

Amid all its upgrades and advances, the US Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is lacking one feature: urinals.

Every bathroom on the Ford is, for the first time, gender-neutral, equipped with flush toilets and stalls, according to Navy Times.

Bathroom-design experts have said sit-down toilets are less sanitary and take up more space, and most of the Ford's crew members are men. (Women are only about 18% of the Navy.)

But the Navy has said getting rid of urinals has advantages for current and future operations.

Making every bathroom accessible to all of the ship's sailors will make things more convenient for sailors, the Navy has said. And bathrooms that can be used by either gender mean the Navy can reassign them without making any design changes, should the crew's makeup change.

My home-away-from-home launched in Texas in 1943 had a urinal on the deck up against a bulkhead just below the bridge. It was affectionately known as the “Sea Pisser” and was really entertaining when I had to answer Nature’s Call about 0400 in the Gulf of Tonkin with the skies full of meteorites and the urinal flush water running with bioluminscent algae.

I’m sure it is offensive, and a micro aggression to have urinals, with the underlying assumption that men with penises are using said facility.

So what? Are urinals that vital to our nation’s defense that a ship can’t function without them?

Do they flush with fresh water? Salt water plugs up the drains from conventional urinals.

The old salt water commodes are gone, replaced by a modern vacuum system that gets clogged if someone as much as tries to flush a chem wipe down the toilet and doesn't work very well for urinals.

People are going to try to make this a gender issue. It's not. Smaller navy ships have been using this system for a while now.

“Imagine all the women b***ing about the men leaving the seats up.”

It will be even worse when the “ “women” “ leave the seats up

While Navy ships do make their own fresh water, it never used to be used for flushing toilets and urinals. Those were flushed with salt water.

Rushed crew members + no urinals = piss all over the deck.

Because men and women both enjoy sitting down on a pee splattered seat.

In the interest of accommodating minorities, I have a proposal. M*slims are the most oppressed and misunderstood minority. M*slims install toilets in such a way that the user does NOT face Mecca while eliminating.

The ship at sea will always be going in different directions, and the latrine user will be facing in different directions at different times, and thus it will sometimes be a grave offense for M*slims to use the can, and sometimes not. To eliminate the possibility of the M*slim going to hell and not having his 72 virgins, here is a solution.

Make use of the gyroscope and the GPS to establish firmly the direction of Mecca at all times. The bathrooms would be installed on a plane having the ability to rotate. The toilets would be swung around, depending on what direction the ship is facing. This way the users would be assured that their piddling or pooping would not be wafting in the direction of Mecca, and could rest assured that they would get their virgins.

< part of this is sarcasm, part not/>

Yup. That’s how I remember it too. Boilers first then the crew. First ship I was on had the freshwater tanks for the boilers in the engine room. A five gallon bucket bath on the lower level worked great when we were doing water rationing. ;-)

I was using the bridge urinal once when we were getting shot at by NVN artillery. It really came in handy during long missions to bombard NVN.

True, nukes have fresh water available. (Yes, I was a navy nuke officer.)
No, they never have enough fresh water for comfort, not enough for good showers, and absolutely not enough to use it flushing the toilets.
