How Nationalism Can Solve the Crisis of Islam
Wall Street Journal ^ | 26 May, 2017 | Sohrab Ahmari

Transnational liberalism breeds resentments and anxieties that are only beginning to surface across the developed world.

Paris

Last Sunday President Trump stood before Muslim leaders in Riyadh and declared: “America is a sovereign nation, and our first priority is always the safety and security of our citizens. We are not here to lecture. We are not here to tell other people how to live, what to do, who to be, or how to worship.”

Amid the journalistic uproar that greets nearly everything Mr. Trump says, few noted the connection he made between these two concepts: We are sovereign, and we don’t want to lecture. By putting them together, the president scrambled the pattern that has long shaped the West’s relations with Islam.

For decades, the West has seen itself as an empire of rights and liberal norms. There were borders and nations, but these were fast dissolving. Since rights were universal, the empire would soon encompass the planet. Everyone would belong, including Muslims, who were expected to lose their distinctness.

It didn’t work, as the latest jihadist attack, at a concert for teens in Manchester, England, attests. So it makes sense to consider alternatives. Judging by his Saudi speech, Mr. Trump wants to revive the nation-state as the primary political vehicle for encountering Islam. The nation has clear—and limited—territorial and cultural boundaries. It says we are this, and you are that.

To the French philosopher Pierre Manent, such thinking is the beginning of wisdom. “We have a big problem with Islam,” he tells me. “And it’s impossible to solve it through globalist, individualist, rights-of-man mantras.”

WSJ is not allowing me to read more of the article. Is the conclusion anything like the title of the piece?

.....”The nation has clear—and limited—territorial and cultural boundaries. It says we are this, and you are that”.....

That is exactly correct......the world was not designed for multiculturalism mumble jumbo.....God is a God of distinctions for a reasons that are good for mankind...and so are we.........man without God is trying to dismantle and destroy them at every level.

This is all well and good. The moslems need to convert or kill the entire planet for their savior to return. Islam means submit. Moslems mean, submit or die. War has begun, we engage and defeat, or children, grandchildren or great grandchildren are tortured, raped and murdered by the hordes. I say, kill ‘em now, kill ‘em all.

And if the world ever becomes 100% muslim their prophet won’t show up and they will turn inward and kill their own who they deem not islamic enough.

Meanwhile satan will be rolling with laughter.

Eznavy, your demand for genocide is a bit too much. Please refrain from being a mass murderer.

The war began 1,400 years ago. Islam is making remarkable progress in Europe. Jews are leaving there in droves. The rest of Europe is embracing dhimmitude.

Our government won’t allow us to kill off the jihadis, since there are other forms of spreading Islam that are perfectly legal under our democratic system. There is jihad of the tongue, of the pen and of money, besides jihad of the sword.

How are we to declare war on Islam when we can’t have a consensus of what defines jihad?

How so, like this?: “Nation states formed an alliance and destroy every Muslim mosque, university, and philanthropy. There was resistance but the troublemakers we fed to the pigs.”

Our “system” is not democratic, we are a representitive republic, or constitutional republic, AKA, a republican form of governance. War is war, game on, engage or die.

Exnavy said I am stupid. Exnavy is a person who advocates murder. Encitement to riot is a crime. We all know Exnavy will not go out and commit murder. What he wants is to encourage other people to commit murder while he sits back in his living room and smiles upon himself at what a good job he has done to ruin some other persons life. Oh wait, that is exactly what the Moslem bosses are doing to encourage the suicide bombers. Exnavy is in practice exactly what a Moslem jihadi is. He encourages others to do violence and murder. Exnavy is no better than Charles Manson.

Apparently the Left has found a new way to get rid of the Jews.

Let the muslims do it.

A constitutional amendment is needed. The constitution should never be construed to give protection to sharia.

I prefer constitutional republic, but the terms are used interchangably, as you know.

You had no comment on my point.

The article is very thought provoking. When Trump went to the ME, I noted that he is bringing back our old policy of dealing with nation states and their rulers, and not with various fantasy “rebels,” as Obama did. Obama, of course, liked these groups because they were generally pro-Islamist and opposed to a secularist or at any rate not fanatical Islamist ruler. But Obama is all about extending the caliphate and having a one-world Islamist government with no nations but Islam. He does this out of his great Marxist hatred of the West and Christianity.

This is the thing the author doesn’t take into account: Islam sees itself as a political system as well. This is why Muslim countries that wish to be governed by law and function like a modern state must be repressive because they constantly need to suppress the fanatical Islamic clergy and their followers. So what leaders of Muslim countries need to do is encourage a reexamination of Islam in terms of its claims to be a form of government.

I didn’t know if this will happen, but I do think that Trump’s attempt to go back to dealing with nations and national governments is good and may bring back some stability and responsibility In that part of the world.

Other than that, the author is right in saying that European countries should not abandon their cultural and religious background in pursuit of some fantasy neutrality. But here he once again overlooks the fact that the Islamic immigrants to Europe are not content with simply being tolerated, treated equally and allowed to live their lives - they want to take over and impose their system on everyone because this political vision is part and parcel of Islam. And that must be dealt with.
